(No Model.) 7
J. 1:". WILMOT. SHOE FOR BENT WIRE TABLE 0R CHAIR LEGS.
Patented Feb. 13, 1- 94.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN F. WILMOT, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE A. ANDREWS &
. COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
SHOE FOR BENT-WIRE TABLE O R CHAIR LEGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 514,744, dated February 13, 1894.
Application fi ledDecember 30.1392. Serial No.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. WILMOT, a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoes for Bent- Wire Table and Chair Legs, by means of which casters, rubber cushions, and other like articles may be secured to such table and chair legs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a shoe for that kind or class of table or chair legs, which are formed up of wire bent into the desired shape, such table or chair legs being made ordinarily by twisting and bending a wire so that a loop shall be formed'serving as a foot which may rest on the floor and so that the twisted portionthereof shall serve as the leg of the table or chair above such foot. Table or chair legs of this character or class are illustrated and described in Patents Nos. 401,552, 417,327 and 468,916, respectively, and the object of my invention is to obtain a shoe which can be readily attached to the foot of such a table or chair leg, such shoe being well adapted to come directly in contact with the floor on which the table or chair is placed, and such shoe also afiording means by which a caster or rubber cushion, or any desired and like thing, may be secured to such foot of the table or chair leg, and when so secured thereto the shoe or the shoe and its attachment will form a sightly'and ornamental appearance when viewed in connection with the table or chair leg.
The manner in which I accomplish the 0bect sought by me is fully illustrated in the drawings accompanying and forming a part hereof, in Which- Figure 1, is-a perspective view, showing the lower portion of a table or chair leg, and the foot thereof with my device attached thereto; Fig. 2, a sectional View of the foot of the chair leg and my device; Fig. 3, a front view of my device.
The same letter of reference is used to indicate a given part where more than one View thereof is shown.
A, is a table or chair leg. 7 a, is the loop or foot thereof; and a" is the twisted leg-portion.
B, is the part of the device embodying my 456,832. on) model.)
invention fitting into the foot of the table or chair leg.
b, is a groove around the circular portion of part B, designed to come in contact with the wire forming the foot of the table or chair leg; and such wire fits into such groove.
b, is a depression, which I prefer to place in the back of shoe B to receive the end 'of a hereinafter described set-screw, although the placing of such depression in such part B is notan'essentialport-ion of the deviceembodying my invention.
b is a hole in part B adapted to receive the pintle of a caster or one end of a bolt.
0, is a clamp; and D, a set-screw in said clamp.
The manner of attaching this shoe to a table or chair leg of the kind named is well illustrated in the drawings, and consists in placing the part Bin foot a so that the wire forming the foot shall fit into the grooveb on such part B, and then slipping the clamp G into place over the foot a and part B, and turning set-screw D firmly into place so that the end thereof shall press against part B and hold part B against the foot 01. The depression b is made in part B to receive the end of set screw D so that when such set screw is turned, as described, into place against part B, such part B and the clamp C will be less liable to be forced from place than when such depression is not used.
The principal use or function of my invention consists in providing means for attaching either a caster, arubber cushion, or other like article to a'chair or table leg of the kind described, and hole W, in part B of the shoe,
enables me to readily and'properly secure thereto a caster, by inserting the pintle thereof in such hole or a rubber cushion by inserting a bolt in such hole extending therefrom into such rubber cushion.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a shoe for bent wire table and chair legs, the combination of a body piece having a curved edge and a groove therein adapted to receive and fit against the wire forming the footof the leg, a clasp fitting over the wire and the body piece and a set screw adapted to be set against the clamp and body piece and thereby hold the several parts firmly together; substantially as described.
2. In a shoe for bent wire table and chair legs, the combination of a body piece having a curved edge and a groove therein adapted to receive and fit against the wire forming the foot of the leg, a clasp fitting over the Wire and the body piece, a set screw adapted to be set against the clamp and body piece, and a depression in the body piece adapted to receive the end of the set screw; substantially as described.
3. In a shoe for bent wire table and chair
