BRICK-K'IVLN.
SPECIEIOATION forming part of Lettere Patent No. 514,709, dated February 13,1894.
Application filed June 26, 1893. Serial No. 4 -'78,8 53. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known lthat I, THOMAS GREEN, a citi.
` zen of the United States, residing at Sioux "ence ybeing had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. i
My invention relates to continuous brick kilns, and the object is to provide flues to regulate the draft and progress of the res and to utilize the surplus heat of the burning chambers. v
My invention is a modification of my continuous brick kiln, for which application, Serial No. 389,718, was -tiled on the th day of April, 1891, and to which reference is respectfully made.
The invention consists, therefore, lin noveltyof construction, thearangement of parts and the combinations thereof, as will be here- I inafter morev fully pointed out.
I have fully illustrated'my invention in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is aview of kiln in side elevation. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail plan view, partly in section, of portion of kiln taken in line 7- 7, Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a detaill cross-sectional view of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail view of damper, used in short lines, as shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail view of damper, or check draft, used in the overhead flue, as shown in Fig. 3.
Referring now to these illustrations, wherein like parts are designated by similar-letters of reference, o. a represents the outer walls of the kiln, b, b, the wall portion of the kiln between the main chambers and the smoke chamber.
't' 114 are dampers, one being located at the inner end ofthe iiue C,Fig. 3, and consists of a cap, which may be `drawn up to Open, or let down to close the draft. j j2 is another kind of damper used vin the short iues'F. v
k k are fire holes located in the top of central iue G. They by regulating the damper the kiln, adapted to above, each being cap.
L is the smoke-stack of the kiln. Y
mm is the frame roof of the kiln.
A, A2, dto., are the continuous chambers extending around thel outside of the kiln, and capable of being entered through the Openings X X, as shown in Fig. 1.
be fed and regulated from provided witha removable located in the center c c, Fig. 2, are partitions separating the chambers A, A2, &c. n B is the smoke chamber located longitudinally between the' chambers in the center oil the kiln, and communicating directly with the smoke-stack L.
C is a flue leading directly from each chamber of the kiln over the top of the chamber into the smoke chamber. The dampers i 4 controlling this tlu e, are so located that they may be easily reached and repaired when out of order.
G is a continuous flue passing around the cent-er of this kiln between the chambers A A2, &c., and above the smoke chamber.
F F are short iiues leading directly from every chamber A A2, &c.,into the continuous are regulatedby the dampers j j2, duc., which are located inthe fiues F, near the iue G. By closing the damper in the iiue'C, thus shutting o communication with chambers ahead, the surplus heat is drawn from any chamber through the tlue F into the continuous flue G; thence, in the short tiues, it may be conducted into any desired chamber, and there mingle with the heat in the burning chamber. Thus, as shown lin Fig. 3, damper t' is closed, shutting off communication between chamber A and the smoke chamber. The brick in A is burned and in A2 is burning, while in A3 and A4 the green brick is just set and ready to be fired. It isdesired to conduct the heat from Apast A2 into A3 and A4. Dampers j, js and 32 are opened and j2, and the heat is drawn from A past A2 and intoA3 and A4, as shown by the direction of the arrows.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is t The combination in a continuous brick In testimonywhereoflaffxmysgnatnrcin kiln, of a, series of drying chambers, e smoke presence of two Witnesses. chamber located between said drying chanlbers, and draft flues leading from the outer 5 Walls of the drying chambers over said cham- Witnesses:
bers and into the smoke chamber, substan- I-I. C. GARDINER, tially as described.
