CARL W. A. KOELKEBECK, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
STEEL-FOUNDRY PLANT.
Application filed July 29, 1907.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL W. A. KoELKE- BECK, of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steel- Foundry Plants, of which the following is a specification.
This invention. relates to steel plants and an object of the invention is, to provide new and improved means for utilizing the waste products of combustion and gases from an open-hearth steel furnace for drying purposes for example to dry the cores located in the coreovens or molds located in the drying ovens of a steel foundry plant.
A further object of the present invention is to provide an exhauster in connection with the furnace whereby the exhauster may be employed for maintaining combustion within the furnace and for conveying the waste products from the furnace for drying purposes.
To this end my invention consists in a steel plant, and in the arrangement and combination of parts all as fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing which illustrates an application of my invention Figure 1 is a diagrammatic plan of a. steel foundry plant embodying my invention; Fig. 2 a side elevational view of open-hearth furnace stack.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates an open-hearth furnace of the well known type in communication with regenerators 2 and 3 by means of the usual passages t and 5.
6 and 7 designate valves and 8 a stack or chimney for the open-hearth furnace. The passage 9 leading to the stack 8 is provided with a damper 10 and the stack with a damper 11 located at the top thereof as shown by Fig. 2. This damper- 11 is operated from the ground level by means of a rope 12.
The drying or core-ovens 13 are preferably located as shown by the drawing, to one side of the open-hearth furnace, but this particular location is not necessary. In open communication with the passage 9 is a pipe or passage 14. This pipe extends from the passage or chimney-inc 9 to a flue or passage 15 leading to the core-oven stack 16. Pipe 14: is adapted to lead the Waste prod- Specification of Letters Patent.

nets of combustion and gases from the openhearth furnace to the core-ovens and from the core-ovens to the core-oven stack 16.
Located between the core-ovens and the open hearth furnace I employ a fan or some suitable exhauster 17 designed to aid in drawing the products of combustion and waste gases through the pipe 1 1 to the coreovens. The exhauster 17 communicates with a branch-pipe or passage 18 leading from pipe 1-1- and with a pipe 19 leading to the ovens.
20 and 21 designate dampers respectively located in pipes 14 and 18. The hotgases, etc., are delivered to the several core-ovens through valve controlled flues 22 preferably arranged at or near the bottoms of the ovens and after circulating throughout the ovens are led therefrom through the branch-pipes 23. Each of the branch-pipes is provided with a damper 24. The flue 15 leading to the core-oven stack is provided with a damper 25. Under my invention the hotgases, etc., from the open-hearth furnace may also be utilized in drying a ladle 26. For this purpose I provide branch-pipe 27 having a damper 28 communicating with passage 19.
In practice, I prefer to place all the fines, pipes or passages for conveying the hot-gases below ground.
What I claim is:
In a steel plant, in combination with an open hearth furnace and drying ovens, a plurality of stacks, means of common communication with both stacks from the furnace, means to cut off one or both stacks from direct communication with the furnace, a flue connecting the furnace with the drying ovens, and having means of communication through said ovens with one of said stacks, an exhausting and forcing fan intermediate the furnace and ovens, and valve means to control the passage of the products of combustion through said flue, ovens and stacks or any of them, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CARL W. A. KOELKEBECK.
Witnesses:
HARRY Sussnn, J. MCCORMAGK.
