TIN CAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 514,668, dated February 13, 1894. Application filed April 17, 1893. Serial No. 470,714- (No model.) Patented in Sweden March 1, 1892, No. 3,884-
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL Auens'r WED- HOLM, a subject of the King of Sweden and Norway, residing at Nykoping, Sweden, have invented a certain'new and useful Improvement in Tin Cans, (for which I have obtained Letters Patent of the Kingdom of Sweden, No. 3,884, dated March 1, 1892;) and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a plan of the sheet-metal blank used in making my improved can. Fig. 2 is a side view of a can made from the blank shown in Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a top view of the can.
Like letters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the figures.
This invention relates to the manufacture of sheet-metal (tin) cans, such as milk and cream cans, or cans for the preservation of meats and other food products, and it consists in the novel construction of metal cans of that type as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings, the letter A denotes the flat sheet-metal blank (preferably sheet steel, heavily tinned), which, as will be seen, is cut or stamped out so as to form a straight under edge or bottom, a, straight sides, I) b, at right angles to the bottom a and therefore parallel to each other, while the top part or upper side of the blank is cut out to form three triangular or V-shaped notches, B; the corners of the blank being also cut 0d, as shown at B, so that when the blank is bent with its sides I) b overlapping each other, said cut-off corners B B will together form a triangular notch of the same shape and dimensions as the notches 13. Small incisions, c c, are made at the end of the notches B and corners B to permit of the bending of the edges to form the overlapping scams, 0', in joining (by soldering, riveting, or in any other suitable manner) the projecting parts C which, when connected as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, form the breast of the can.
When the edges h b, and the sides of the parts 0 O are joined by overlapping the edges and securing them together, a hollow body of the outline shown in Figs. 2 and 3 will be formed, the larger lower part of which will be round and slightly tapering in an upward direction, while the breast of the can will be formed with four square corners D, from which the flat sides 0 incline upwardly and inwardly, as shown clearly on the drawings.
To complete the can, all that is necessary is to add a circular bottom and closely-fitting circular top or cover (not shown), adapted to close tightly the circular mouth or opening E.
A can of this construction is exceedingly strong and durable and is easily cleaned, as all parts of theinterior are readily accessible from the top-opening E. Moreover, it forms a novel and attractive shape, and is easily filled or emptied. If desired, one or more handles may be fastened to the sides of the can, preferably on the ,breast of the can, 'i. e. above the corners D.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- As an improved article of manufacture a sheet metal can havingacylindrical body and an angular breast, formed from a single sheet cut to form a straight bottom a, straight sides I), b, and triangular notches B, whereby flaps O are formed which when bent together and connected edgewise, form the breast of the can, substantially as specified.
