To all whom it may concern:
Beitknown th atLWlLLIAM T. SMITH, of Baltimore city, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Woodworking-Machines; and I dohereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in wood working machines, the object being to provide a machine which will do ordinary surface turning, surface carving, twisting, all kinds of routing and fluting, and all styles of rosettes.
With this end in view my invention consists more especially in a machine designed for finishing piano legs or similar articles.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a View in perspective of my improved machine. Fig.2 is an enlarged perspective of a portion thereof, and Figs. 3, and 4, are details of parts of the machine.
A represents the frame of the machine and 1 is a table securely bolted across the upper ends of the two uprights forming the frame. On top of the rigid table 1 a turn-table 3 is supported, said turn table being pivotally connected therewith by means of a central bolt 4 and provided preferably with curved depending flanges 5, 5, at its ends which bear upon rigid table 1. Turn table 3 is further provided with upturned flanges 6, 6, atits side edges and between these upturned flanges 6, 6, a rocking head 7 is supported by means of bolts or pins 8 passing through the head and the flanges. Any suitable connection may be employed by which to render the swinging of this head 7 or of the turntable 3 possible. A spindle 9 is revolubly supported in pillow blocks 10, 10, on the rocking head 7. This spindle is provided with a cutter 11 on its outer end and it is rotated by means of an endless belt 12 passing around a pulley 13 on drive shaft 1t and a pulley 15 on the spindle. The shaft is made adjustable. endwise by means of collars 16, 16, thereon and these collars are held in place by suitable set screws 17 this provision being made to admit of the cutter-head being thrown out or in as occasion may require in order to conform in po- Serial No. 472,216. sition better to the work to be operated upon; The rocking head 7 is provided witha handle 18 secured thereto and which extends out in the direction of the cutter head where it may be conveniently grasped when occasion may require it, in order to turn the table 3 laterally, to swing head 7 or to give more pressure upon the cutter head. For ordinary purposes, the weight 20 suffices for this purpose. This weight is capable of being slid longitudinally upon the handle to different positions according to the weight required to give the desired pressure and it is held in place by set screw 21.
B represents the working table. This table is secured on a vertical shaft 22 held in brackets 23, 23, wherein it is capable of being turned to throw the table into the best position. A hand screw 24: is provided at the lower end of the frame for raising and lowering this shaft to the proper position and a set screw 25 is adapted to be turned to hold it in place. Upon this working table the turning appliances, the pattern, 650., are located the table being so constructed that different sets may be used I for turning difierent shaped articles or the turning devices may be removed altogether in the event that the operator simply desires to use the cutter head for surface carving.
O is the bed-plate of one of these removable turning devices. This bed plate is preferably provided with longitudinal ribs on its lower face to give it proper strength and it has connected with its lower face an enlargement 26 which has a dove-tailed connection with working table B whereby the bed plate 0 may he slid back and forth or entirely removed and asa means for retaining it in place a set screw 27 is employed. On the bed-plate O a slide plate 28 is supported, it being preferably provided at or near its side edges with V- shaped flanges 29, 29, which enter and slide in corresponding grooves or trackways 30, 30 formed in the bed-plate, and the slide plate being held on the bed plate by means of overhanging plates 31, 31, at the edges. As a convenient means for shifting this plate in the operation of the turning mechanism, it is furnished with a rack bar 32 on its lower face, and a spindle 33having a hand wheel 3i on its outer end, by which to turn it at pleasure,
is provided witha toothed pinion 35 the teeth of which engage the rack teeth in the usual manner of appliances of this description so that in order to slide the plate, it is simply necessary to turn the hand wheel.
The usual head and tail stocks 37 and 38 respectively are adjustably held in place on plate 28 and between them the work or blank to be operated upon is clamped. One of these stocks preferably the head stock has a plate 40 connected therewith against which an end of the work or blank abuts. This plate is furnished with a number of holes corresponding to the number of spiral grooves or twists to be cut and as each successive groove is cut a pin is placed in another adjacent hole whereby the blank or work is turned into proper position to receive its next cut.
The work or blank is turned preferably by the following mechanism. A spiral shaft 41 is revolubly supported on plate 28 and consequently is adapted to slide with the plate. The shaft is provided with a spiral guide 42 preferably a groove in which a rigid pin 43 extending upward from the bed-plate projects, which pin causes the spiral shaft to turn as the slide plate and spiral shaft are moved endwise. The spiral shaft has a toothed wheel 44 on one end and the teeth of this wheel are adapted to mesh with the teeth of a wheel 45 on the head stock 37 whereby to cause the blank or work held thereby to turn. So to turn the blank while it is being operated upon the operator simply turns the hand wheel 34. Should it be desirable to turn the blank or work in the opposite direction an adjustable gear Wheel 46 is lowered on its slotter supporting standard 47 to a point between the wheels 44 and 45 and the blocks which support the ends of spiral shaft 41 are moved outward to make space for said wheel 46. This wheel of course causes the blank to rotate in the opposite direction.
To guide the cutter in its operation, a pattern 50 is secured on one side of slide plate 28 and an arm 51 adj ustably secured to rocking head 7 has a roller 52 on its outer end adjustably connected with the arm 51. This roller 52 travels on the pattern and causes the rocking head to rock up and down at the proper points to conform to the shape of the article under treatment.
Although the functions of the various parts have been referred to in the course of the description, a brief description of the operation may be added.
The article to be worked is placed between the head and tail stocks, the machine is set in motion and the operator turns the hand wheel 34, the wheel 52 following the pattern raises and lowers the cutter-head. The various parts are adjusted to suit the article to be formed.
It is evident that slight changes might be made in the form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention hence I do not wish to limit myself to the exact construction herein set forth, but,
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a wood working machine, the combination with a main frame, a rigid table thereon, a turn-table supported and capable of turning upon the rigid table, and a cutter head carried by the turn-table, of a sliding bed-plate, a slide-plate on the bed-plate constructed and adapted to slide at right angles to the direction in which the bed-plate slides, said slide having means thereon for carrying the blank to be operated upon, substantially as set forth.
2. In a wood working machine, the combination with a main frame, a rigid table thereon, a turn-table supported and capable of turning upon the rigid table, and a cutter head carried by the turn-table, of a revoluble working table, a bed-plate having sliding connection with this working table, and aplate having sliding connection with the bed-plate, said slide plate constructed to carry the blank to be operated upon, substantially as set forth.
3. In a wood working machine, the combination with a frame having a rigid table thereon, a turn table mounted on the rigid table, and a cutter head carried by the turntable, of a revoluble working table, means for raising this table and for retaining it in position, a bed plate having sliding connection with this working table and a plate having sliding connection with the bed plate, said slide plate constructed to carry the blank to be operated upon, substantially as set forth.
4. In a wood working machine, the combination with a turn table, and a cutter head carried by the turn table and capable of being rocked thereon, of a working table, means for raising and lowering the latter and locking it in position, a bed plate having sliding connection with the working table, means for locking the two together, a slide on the bed plate for carrying the blank to be operated upon, and means for shifting the slide plate, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination with a bed plate, a slide plate, and means for sliding said plate back and forth, of head and tail stocks, located on the slide plate, a spiral shaft revolubly sup ported on the slide plate, said spiral shaft having a gear wheel thereon, and a gear wheel IIO on one of the stocks, a slotted standard, an
plate having a rack thereon, a turn shaft having a gear wheel the teeth of which engage the teeth of the rack and means whereby this shaft is turned, of head and tail stocks on the slide plate, a. revolubly supported spiral shaft, a projection connected with the bed plate and projecting into the spiral groove of the spiral shaft gear wheels on the spiral shaft and one of the stocks and an adjustable ingermediate gear wheel, substantially. as set .10
