SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 514,322, dated February 6, 1,894. Application filed February 23, 1893. Serial No. 463.305. (No modelz) To all whom; it ritaly concer-'m Be it known that we, ANTHONY IsKn and ALBERT lsKE, citizens of the United States, residing at Lancaster, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Articles for Table-Service; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in an article of table service in which a rack carrying cruets or the like is so combined with a call-bell as to form said article.

The objects of the invention, as well as the elements thereof, will distinctly appear in the following description, and will be clearly set forthin the claim.

The purposes of the invention are attained by the mechanism and devices illustrated'in the accompanying drawings in which similar letters of reference designate like parts throughout the several views, and in which- Figure l is a central vertical section of a combined caster and gong embodying the elements of this invention; Fig. 2, a direct plan of the cruet rack detached from Fig. l, with portions of two cruet holders broken away for want of space in the drawings; Fig. 3, an elevation of a cup which may be used in place of the cruets before mentioned; and Fig. 4, an elevation of a bolster-bar supporting tubular sockets or cups on its extremities, which may be pivoted on the central stem in place of the rack before mentioned.

In the drawings A designates an ordinary gong mounted in the usual manner on the central arch or frame, a, having its lower ends or feet rigidly secured to the under side of the concaved base-ring, A', provided at its lower edge with downwardly and outwardly curved projections, a', forming legs or feet on which said ring-base stands; and A2 designates a pear-shaped hammer having the upper end of its stem, a2, rigidly secured into the under side of a fiat strip or arm A3, having secured into one end thereof a pin-shaft a3, which has its extremities pivoted into side projected lugs ai, integral with the central arch or gong supporting frame a, as shown, adapting said hammer to be swung outwardly and upwardly in` the direction of the dotted curve, a5, against the body of the gong, by means of the downward propulsion of the plunger rod yet to be described, the weight of the hammer returning it again to the po sition shown in Fig. l.

Through the center of the gong, and into the top of the supporting frame, a, of the gong, is securely afiixed, as by screwing, the lower end of a tubular shaft B, of approved length and diameter; a rounded collar-screw b, is placed on the threaded lower end of the shaft and Iirmly screwed home onto the gong to bind the several parts tightly together; and onto the upper end of the shaft is securely, but removably, affixed a knob or button B', of approved size and shape, to form an ornamental iinial to this end. It will be seen that the shaft, B, is adapted to have' rotatably sleeved thereon the carriers or racks yet to be described; that the screw, b, forms a shoulder on which said carriers or racks may rotate; and that the ornamental inial serves to form a handle whereby the completed article may be conveniently carried.

To form the rack or carrier, C, a plan of which is shown in Fig. 2, a tube c of approved dimensions, is rotatably sleeved, through its axial bore c', on the stem or shaft, B, and having its lower end to rest on the shoulder b, as shown in Fig. l; at a prescribed point above its lower end this tube is provided with an integral body C', having radially extending arms c2, having rigidly secured to the tops of their outer extremities circular base-plates or disks C2, adapted to support on their npper faces the cruets or other receptacles yet to be described; and near its upper end this tube is likewise provided with an integral body C3, havingits concaved outer edges pro-u vided with corresponding tubes c3, having secured therein rings C4, of approved size, adapted to receive the bodies of the cruets or receptacles, just mentioned, and hold them in position on their respective disks. This carrier or rack, C, with all its component parts, may be integrally formed as one casting is made; or, its elements may be separately constructed and then rigidly joined, as by brazing or soldering. Three rings and supporting disks are here shown in the construction of the rack, but this is not essential, for

this number may be increased or diminished, at pleasure, to meet the requirements of the article in which said rack is to be used.

D designates a plunger-rod which is passed down through the axial bore of the shaft, B, and has its lower end resting on the pivoted hammer arm or plate, A3, as shown in Fig. l, and its upper end, at a prescribed distance above the top of said shaft or tube, B, is provided with an approved button d, adapting said rod to be pushed downward through the tube to propel the hammer upward in its course against the inner face of the gong to sound a call, the weight of the hammer, by gravitation, returning both hammer and rod to the positions shown in Fig. 1.

Within the rings, C4, of the rack, C, and on the disks, C2, thereof, are placed bottles or cruets E, of any approved size or shape, as shown in Fig. l, when the article will be a caster combined with a call-bell; cups F, Fig. 3, of any approved size or shape may be used in place of the cruets just mcntionedserving respectively as, cigar holder, match receiver, and ash receptacle, when the article will be a smokers companion combined with a callbell; and said rack may be dispensed with, and a device G, consisting of a two-armed bolster-bar, G', having a central vertical pivot orifice g, and on its extremities vertically sup ported tubular sockets or' cups g', secured thereto by screws g2, as shown in Fig. 4L, when the article becomes a match or tooth-pick holder combined with a call-bell. Having now described our said invention and fully ascertained the manner in which it is to be performed, and laying no claimsbroadly to the call-bell, what we do consider new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In an article of table service, the carrierrack, C, comprising: the tube c having the axial bore c to be rotatably sleeved on the shaft B as described, and provided near its lower end with the perpendicular body C having the radial arms c2 and the service supporting plates C2 secured to the tops of the outer ends of said arms; and, the perpendicular body C3 with the concaved portions c3 in its outer edge near the upper end of the said tube c, and the service retaining rings C4 secured into the said concaved portions, all substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
