SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 514,204, dated February 6, 1894.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES H. TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Letter-Copying Presses; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in letter copying presses of that class wherein a letter is copied from one sheet of paper to another by being compressed together in a manner well known and understood commonly by means of screw or levers.
The nature of my invention consists in the employment of a series of radial levers in combination with a knuckle jointed mechanism arranged to compress a platen upon a bed plate. I attain this object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side View; Fig. 2 is a top view of the platen and compressing apparatus arranged with a single pair of levers. Fig. 3 is a top view of the bed with platen placed thereon the parts being adapted to two pairs of compressing levers. Figs. 4is a sectional elovation of the compressing mechanism on line S Fig. 2. Fig. 5 isa sectional elevation of the compressing mechanism viewed in the direction of arrow T Fig. 2.
Similar letters referto similar parts throughout the several views. f A is a bed plate to which are attached two upright screw posts L. Arranged to move vertically upon said screw posts is a platen B resting upon springs O.said posts carrying at their upper extremities the nuts G. which are screw threaded upon said posts and together with the springs O are'adapted to vertically adjust the platen B. To the center of the platen is attached a screw post K having at its upper extremity a nut I and at its lower extremitya spring R. -The object of the screw and nut upon said post K is to admit of a vertical adjustment of the leversD; connected therewith between nut I and spring R is arranged a knuckle jointed mechanism consisting of a bifurcated yoke J, a lever H, and a pivotal washer E.
P P are staples which secure in working position compressing levers D D. The inner ends of which levers are operatingly secured to the pivotal washer E preferably by pivots and the outer ends of which levers engage shouldered collars F upon posts L.
In Fig. 3 two sets of the lovers D are illustrated.
The extra levers more than are shown in Fig. 2 simply increase the strength of the mechanism without changing the nature.
Having described the mechanism of my invention the operation is as follows. It is obvious that to compress the platen B it is only necessary to press down on the lever H and vice versa to elevate it.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A copying press consisting of bed plate A having posts L secured thereto in combination with platen B .adapted to be vertically adjusted upon said posts by means of shouldered collars F, springs 0, nuts G, levers D, pivot-a1 washer E, spring R, knuckle jointed lever H, bifurcated yoke J, post K, and nutI,
substantially as shown and described.
2. A letter copying press consisting of bed plate A, having threaded posts L, secured thereto and carrying nuts G, springs O, shouldered collars F, in combination with platen B, havinglevers D, fulcrumed thereon, whereby the platen B is adapted to be vertically adjusted by means of levers D, nuts G, springs O, substantially as shown.
