SHIPPING-CAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 514,052, dated February 6, 1894.
' Application filed April 8 1 893 To call whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHRISTOPHER WRIGHT, of Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented certain useful Improvements in Shipping-Cans; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention has relation to a new and novel article of manufacture, and relates more particularly to that class of shipping cans, which are provided with wooden or other jackets.
The object of the invention is, to provide a can that shall be simple of construction, useful, and present a finished appearance.
Figure 1 shows the can partly in section, one side of which shows the can as arranged without the jacket, while the remaining half shows a sectional view of the can as arranged when provided with the jacket and bottom. Fig. 2 shows a broken section of a can embodying my invention, wherein I have shown the central web securing the meeting edges of the jacket.
The object and aim of my invention is more particularly to provide an economic method in the manufacture of shipping cans, and in furtherance of this aim Ihave constructed a shipping can provided with the top A, which is of the usual form and configuration, and of any suitable size. This upper or breast portion. of the can I provide with a circular upwardly extending flange or shoulder a, as shown in the drawings, the material from this shoulder extending at right angles in the manner of a ring, as more clearly shown atX in Fig. 1. This flange may be either spun or stamped within this upper portion of the can, which is provided with the usual center or cork neck. The bottom of the canI make in the shape of a shallow tray and providea circular shoulder a and the outwardly extending flange e, as shown on the X side of Fig. 1 in the drawings. The body portion of the can is in the shape of an ordinary cylinder of sheet metal or any other suitable material, the upper and lower edges of which are preferably Serial No. 469,633. (No soda.)
slightly flanged outward. In constructing this central portion of the can B, care should be taken that this central or drum portion nicely fits around the inwardly projecting shoulders a and a, as shown in the figures, the flanged portion of the drum resting upon the flat rim portion e, e, of the top and bottom of the can. This drum portion B is soldered to both top and bottom forming a neat and tight joint.
The next step is to adjust the jacket 0 which is'a simple operation in that the jacket, which may be of any suitable material, has been previously cut a proper length, and is now simply placed around the body portion B, and the ends thereof resting against the webD, which web is then bent over, as will be noticed in Fig. 2,so that the meeting edges of the jacket are nicely secured. This web D comprises a strip of sheet metal, bent in the form of the letter T, and extends along the full length of the can. The strip is secured by soldering the same at the lower end of the main stem, which is double, while each of the upper extending portions serves to removably hold the ends of the jacket 0.
The next step is to bend over the flanges e, e, upon the jacket 0, securely binding and holding this jacket, as will be noticed upon the Z side of the drawings, so that the top and bottom securely bind the jacket against the can around both the top and bottom edges, furnishing a neat and substantial device.
F represents the bottom of the jacket, which is secured as is usual in devices of this class.
Having thus described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent, is
1. In a shipping can, the combination with. a main incasing shell, of a top provided with a suitable spout and having a circumferential grooved flange adapted to offer aseating for the upper edge of the incasing shell permanently secured thereto, the outer free flanged end of said top forming an extending shoulder, a bottom provided with a grooved circumferential flange adaptedto offer aseating for the lower edge of said incasing shell, permanently secured thereto, the outer flanged end of said bottom forming an extending shoulder and a jacket, removably held within the shoulder of said top and bottom, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In ashipping can, the combination with a main incasing shell, of a top provided with a suitable spout and having a circumferential grooved flange adapted to otfera seating for the upper edge of the incasing shell permanently secured thereto, the outer free flanged end of said top forming an extending shoulder, a bottom provided with a grooved circumferential flange adapted to offer a seating for the lower edge of said incasing shell permanently secured thereto, the outer flanged end of said bottom forming an extending shoulder, a T shaped retaining web secured to said can, and a jacket, removably held within the shoulders of said top andbottom, the uniting edges of said jacket being removably held by the extending upper portions of said web, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a shipping can the combination with a main incasing shell or body portion B, the
upper and lower edges of which are slightly flared outward, of a top A provided with a circular upwardly extending flange or shoulder a,the materialfrom this shoulder extendin g outward and down, so as to form a flanged groove e, the upperflared portion of said main body being permanently secured to this shoulder a, the bottom of said can being provided with a flanged groove, forming the shoulder a and terminating in an outwardly extending flange c, said main or shoulder portion being secured to the circular shoulder a and a jacket 0 held by the flanged portions e e, and the retaining web D secured to the body of said can and adapted to removably hold the ends of the jacket therein, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
