LADDER ATTACHMENT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 513,920, dated January 30, 1894.

To an whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, EDWARD F. GUSTE, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ladder Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the in vention, such as will enable Others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in ladders, for use in stores, libraries, and the like places, where it is desired to put up or to take down articles from high shelves without injury either to the shelf or to the articles ranged thereon.

My invention will be understood by referring to the accompanying drawings in which the same parts are indicated by the same letters throughout the several views.

Figurel represents a perspective view of a number of high shelves with the improved ladder resting against the front'edges of the said shelves. Fig. 2 represents an enlarged front view of the upper part of the said ladder. Fig. 3 represents a section along the line a: w of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4: represents a plan View of said ladder when stood up in a vertical position.

A represents the ladder provided at its upper end with lugs a, preferably forming part of a metal frame A attached to the upper end of theladder, though eyebolts, staples or equivalent devices may be substituted for the said frame A and its lugs a. Pivoted between these lugs a and held therein by the rod 0 are the lugs 17' on the back of the H- shaped frame B. This frame is padded as at b to prevent scarring the shelves or injuring such articles thereon as may project from the said shelves. It will be seen, if the frame B be made long enough to lap over two spaces of shelves that the weight of the ladder and of the person thereon will be distributed over two or more shelves; and since the padded faces I) press flat against the front of the shelves, that no nicking of the shelves is liable to occur, nor is the head of the ladder liable to strike the articles on the shelves. This improved result over the ordinary form of ladder is most marked in stores having glassware on the shelves, but at the same time the herein described ladder is suitable and convenient for use in stores of every description, where the shelving extends out of reach from the fioor, and also for use in cleaning plate glass windows, show cases and the like.

- I am aware that ladders have been constructed having separate shoes attached to each corner of the ladder, thus making four shoes in all, but since these move independently of each other, the top of the ladder is more difficult to adjust, for instance for use in a crockery store; thus one shoe may project into the space between the shelves caus ing great damage, while the other is properly arranged to bear against the front of the shelving. This would not happen with a ladder of my design. Again, the cross piecebetween the two shoes in my H-shaped frame extends the area of bearing surface and renders my ladder especially adapted for use in cleaning plate glass windows and like fragile surfaces.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is

' 1. The combination with a ladder, of an H shaped frame pivoted to the head of said ladder, substantially as and for the purposes described.

2. The combination with a ladder A, of a metallic frame A secured thereto near the upper end thereof, and an H-shaped frame B padded along its front edges and pivotally attached to said frame A, substantially as and for the purposes described.
