HORACE T. LUSTER, OF BEREA, OHO.
SHOTHOLDING AND MEASURING CABINET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 513,803, dated January 30, 1894.
Application filed March 16,1893l Serial No. 466,196. (No model.)
lowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others v skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in shotholding and measuring cabinets; and it consists in certain features of construction, and in combination of parts, hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
A preferable construction of cabinet em` bodying my invention is exhibited in the accompanying drawings, whereiu- Figurel is ,a front side elevation of the cabinet, portions being broken away and in section to. more clearly show the construction. Fig: 2 is a right hand side elevation ofthe cabinet, partly broken away, and partly in section on line 2-2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective of la portion of the cabinet showing the outer portion of one of the discharging troughs or chutes. Fig. 4 is an enlarged elevation in section on line 4-4,Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the casingof the cabinet. The cabinet, by means of upright partitions B, is divided into any desired number of supply-compartments or holders C, that are preferably located in the upper portion of the cabinet and closed at the top, 1 n common, by a lid or cover, A', that constitutes the Vtop of the casing ot the cabinet and is hinged, at the rear side of the cabinet, as shown at A2, Fig. 2.
The bottom C of compartments or holders C declines forwardly, so as to cause the contents of said holders to gravitatetoward the discharging-openin g, C2, provided at the lower Vend of the bottom of the compartments or holders. Below the discharging-opening of each holder C is provided a measuring conipartment D of predetermined capacit v,a Cut-offs or valves for each supply and its measuringcompartment are provided and operativelyv connected in such a manner that the cut-off or valve at the discharge-opening of the supply-compartment is opened simultaneously with the closing of the cut-off or valve for the measuring-compartment, and vice versa, and normally, by means of a spring or otherwise, the cut-offs orvalves are held in position opening the discharge-opening of the supply-compartment and preventing any discharge from the measuring-compartment. A preferable construction is shown in the drawings wherein the measuring-compartments have, respect ively, a combined tilting-back and decliningbottom, D representing the back-proper and D2 the bottom-proper; said combinedjback and bottom being adapted to operate nicely between the side-walls of the compartment; the back-proper, at its upper end, having an inwardly projecting flange, d', that constitutes a cut-off or valve for closing and opening the discharge-opening of the respective p supply-compartment, and the lower end of the bottom-proper constituting a cut-olf or valve for opening and closing the discharging-end of the measuring-compartment.
The combined tilting-backs and bottoms of the measuring-conipartments of the cabinet are preferably loosely mounted, in common, upon a rod, d, that is suitably supported by and extends transversely of the cabinet through partitions B. rPhe bottom-proper of the combined tilting-backs and bottoms of the measuring-com part m ents have operatively connected therewith, respectively, a rod or stem, d2, that extends forwardly through a suitable hole or perforation, a, in the front side of the cabinet and terminates, at its outer end, in a head, d3. The measuringcompartments are preferably provided, respectively, with a spring, S, attached at one end to the back-proper of the combined tilting-back and bottom, and at its other end to the declining bottom of the supply-compartment and acting in the direction to hold said combined tilting-back and bottom in its normal position, which is that of establishing open communication between the supplyand measuring-coinpartment, as shown'in Fig. 2, and closing the discharging-end of the measuring-compartment.
. By the construction hereinbefore described, it will be observed that upon pushing or actuating rod or stem cl2 inwardly, the combined IOO communication between the su pply and measuring compartments and to open the discharging-end of the measuring-compartment and thereby discharge the contents of the latter.
E represents troughs located below the dischargingends of the measuringcompart ments and extending forwardly through and being suitably supported by the front side of the cabinet, the latter being slotted, as at ct, for the purpose, said troughs being adapted to catch the contents of the respective measuring-compartments and conduct the same to the front side of the cabinet where it is conveniently received. The troughs, preferably just forward of the front side of the cabinet, are provided, respectively, with a cut-oit or valve, e, that is preferably pivoted, as at c', to the front side of the cabinet, the object of said cut-olf or valve being to arrest or prevent the passage of any shot that may, perchange, by jarring of the cabinet and consequent jarring of the cut-offs or valves of the respective supply and measuring-compartments, or otherwise, escape from the measuring compartment into the trough. Hence, cut-olt or valve c is kept normally closed, and in taking shot from the cabinet the operative first opens said cut-olf or valve and catches, by means of his hand or otherwise, any shot that may have accidentally found ingress into the trough and puts the same back into the respective supply-compartment before elicoting the discharge of the contents of the meastiring-compartment.
What I claim is- 1. In a shot-holding and measuring-cabinet, a supply compartment having a declining bottom and a dischargeopening at the lower end of said bottom, a measuring-compartment below said dischargeopening, a cut-olf or valve for establishing open relation between said compartments and being normally open, aout-off or valve for opening and closing the discharging-end of the measuringcompartment and being normally closed, suitable means for simultaneously operating said valves or cut-offs to close communication between 'said compartments and open the discharging-end of the measuringcompartment, and suitable means acting to retain said valves or cut-offs in their normal position, of a trough below the discharging-end of the measuring-compartment, said trough being provided with a cut-off or valve, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a shot-holding and measuring-cabinet, a supply-compartment havinga declining bottom and a discharge-opening at ythe lower end of said bottom, a measuring-compartment below said discharge opening, a
cut-off or valve for establishing and closing open relation between said compartments and being normally open, a cutoif or valve for opening and closing the discharging-end of the measuring-compartment and being normally closed, suitable means for simultaneously operating said valves or cut-offs to close communication between said compartment-s and open the discharging-end of the measuring-compartment, and a single spring, S, acting to retain said valves or cut-offs 1n their normal posit-ion, of a trough, l?, below the discharging-end of the measuring-compartment and provided with a cut-off or valve, e, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a shot-holding and measuringcabinet, a supply-compartment, provided with a discharge-opening, and a measuring-compartment, below said opening, said measuringcompartment having a combined tilting-back and bottom, the back-proper, at its upper end, having a cut-off or valve for closing and opening the aforesaid discharge-opening, and the lower end of the bottom-proper constituting a Valve or cnt-oit for opening and closing the dischargingend ot the measuring-compartment, said valves or cut-ols normally establishing open relation vbetween said compartments and closing the discharging-end ot' the measuring-compartment, suitable means for actuating said combined back and bottom to close the discharge-opening of the supply compartment and open the discharging-end of the measming-compartment, and suitable means for automatically returning said back and bottom to their normal position, substantially as set forth.
4. A shot-holding and measuring-cabinet composed of a casing A, upright partit-ions, B, dividing the cabinet into supply-compartments, C, provided, respectively, with a decliningbottom, C', and with a dischargeopening, C2, measuring-compartments, D', valves for closing and opening the discharge-openings of the supply-compartment and normally open, valves for opening and closing the discharging-ends of the measuring-compartments and normally closed, springs, S, and means substantially as indicated for operating said valves, troughs, E,vand means for preventing the discharge of said troughs, the parts being arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I sign this specification, in the presence of two Witnesses, this 11th day of February, 1893.
