UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDGAR e. HANsooM, Ol EVERETT, MASSACHUSETTS.
COMBINED CIGAR-CUTTER AND ADVERTISING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 513,779, dated January 30, 1894.
Application filed June 21,1893. $erial No. 478,335. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known .that I, EDGAR G. HANSCOM, of Everett, county of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in a Combined Cigar-Cutter and Advertising Device, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like .parts.
This inventionhas for its object to construct a combined cigar cutter and advertising device, which may be cheaply manufactured, efficiently performs its work, and displaysseveral advertising plates.
In accordance with this invention, a cutting blade is secured to a frame located back of a stationary frontwall of a suitable box having one or more holes which receive the tip of the cigar, and a pivotedspring controlled finger lever is provided for depressing said cutter-carrying frame. One of the advertising plates is secured to said cutter carrying frame, so that when the frame is in its elevated position it will be displayed, but when said frame is depressed it will be concealed back of the front wall of the box. Two advertising plates are pivotally arranged back of the aforesaid advertising plates, one in front of the other, which are made laterally movable in opposite Ways by a suitable spring or springs, in order that both may be displayed, and said spring-actuating advertising plates are controlled by a'co-operative part of the cutting mechanism,in such a manner that when said cutting mechanism is operated, and the front advertising plate depressed, they will be-permitted to move laterally in opposite ways, displaying the advertisements thereon. A fourth advertising plate is secured to a fixed point back of the aforesaid pivoted plates in such a manner that when said pivoted plates are moved in opposite ways, as above stated, said stationary advertising plate will be displayed between them.
Figure 1, shows in front elevation a combined cigar cutter and advertising device one bodying this invention; Fig. 2, a sim lar view, the finger lever being depressed as it will be to operate the cutting mechanism and sever the tin of the cigar, the advertising plates being thereby displayed; Fig. 3, a longitudinal vertical section of the apparatus shown in Fig. 1, and Fig. 4, a detail showing the cutter carrying frame, and advertising plates, the
former being depressed sufficiently to display the plates.
The box which contains and supports the parts consists of the bottom plate a, a front wall 1), rear wall 0, like side walls d, and top plate a The bottom and top plates a, e, are herein shown as made of metal in order that suitable projections may be cast thereon or secured thereto, to support the parts, as well as to give the necessary stability to the appa ratus. The top plate 6, is formed with a narrow transverse opening at the front for the advertising plates to be described. The front wall b is herein represented as made of thin sheet metal having several holes 1), arranged side by side to receive the tip of the cigar which is to be severed, and also having a vertical slot 12 in which the finger lever f, works. A metal frame g, such as a casting, is located back of the front wall I), to the front side of which a cutting blade g, is secured byscrews g or otherwise. This frame 9- has upon its rear side one or more projections 9 two being herein shown, arranged one above the other, each having a hole through it in vertical alignment, to receive a guide pin h, which passes up through the bottom plate a, and screws into the top plate 6, said pin thereby also serving asa means of securing said plates together. A projection 6 is also formed upon the frame having a vertical slot 9 through it which receives the finger leverf. The finger lever f, is pivoted to a vertical post a, formed integral with or secured to the bottom plate a, near its rear end, and a springf, is interposed between said lever f, and the bottom plate a, the tendency of which isto maintain said lever in its elevated position. By depressing said lever it will be observed that the frame c, is moved downwardly, following upon the guide h, and the cutting blade 9 will move across the tip receiving holes I), and sever any tip which may project therethrough.
An advertising plate a, is secured to the frame g, which when said frame is in its elevated position will be displayed, but which when said frame is depressed will be concealed back of the front wall 19. Two advertisingplates n, of, are pivotedat 01. to a pro-, jection n, on the underside ofthe top plate- 6, and a spring 71., is attached to a fixed point as to the pivot for instance, the arms of which 5 are connected respectively with said plates '21, m the tendencyof said spring being to move said plates laterally in opposite ways when unrestrained or permitted to act.
Upon the top of the frame g, two projec-, tions g are formed, which when said frame is in its elevated position bear upon or against the lower edges of said plates n, M, at points: remote from their pivot, turning them in opposition to their actuating spring so that they will close one by the other. At such time it wvill be observed that one of said plates as n will' be concealed by the other, n andas both of said plates 1t and-n are located backof the plate '12, the plate 01. will be concealed by zo said plate n. When, however, the frame g,
=is depressed', carrying with it the plate msaid plates-n, n will be permitted to move in opposite ways by means of the actuating spring it and will be displayed as the plate at 2 5 is concealed.
Another advertising plate at is. fixed to the aforesaid projection or, on the top plate e, back of thepivotedplates n, 11*, and when said pivoted plates are permitted to move laterally, tobe displayed, the plates n, will be displayed between them, it being under- :stood that the lateral movement given tosaid "-plates n, 72 is sulficient to leave an open lspace-bet-ween them for this purpose.
I do not desire to confine my invention to theexact detail of construction of the co-operative parts of the operating mechanism,-as -it is obvious such detail may be modified, yet
enabling the same results tobe carried out.
