SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 513,690, dated January 30, 1894. Application filed Tune 28, 1892. Serial No} 438,273- tNo model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD TAUNAY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Peanut-Roasters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in peanut-masters, whereby the same can be effectively heated by a petroleum heating-stove, so that the use of charcoal is dispensed with; and the invention consists of a peanutroaster, comprising an exterior casing having a hinged semi-circular cover, a roasting-drum supported in bearings of the casing, a hinged diaphragm located at the interior of the casing and supported on a seat of the same, said diaphragm being provided with an opening for the top of the heater, a hinged frontlid, and a flue for the exit of the products of combustion, located at the front-Wall of the casing, as will be fully described hereinafter and finally pointed out in the claims.

Figs. 2 and 3 are vertical transverse-sections on line 2 2, Fig. 1, showing the heating-stove respectively in position in the roaster and in the act of being inserted into or removed from the same. Fig. 4: represents a plan view of the hinged diaphragm within the casing.

Referring to the drawings, A represents an oblong casing, of sheet metal which is supported on feet a and provided with a hinged semi-circular cover A. The shaft of the roas ting-drum B is supported in bearings of the side-walls of the casing A said drum being rotated in the usual mannerby means of a handcrank 12. The cover A is provided with a handle a by which it is readily being taken hold of and moved into open or closed position.
The bottom of the casing A is provided with an opening 0 of sufficient size to permit the insertion of the fount of the petroleum heating-stove .0, the front wall of the casing being also provided with an opening 0' of suificient size, so as to permit the insertion and removal of the heating-stove. The opening 0' of the front-wall is closed by a hinged lid A that is provided with a transparent window of mica or other suitable material. The bottom of the casing Ais further provided with holes 0 around the central opening 0 for the fount, said holes serving for supplying the required quantity of air for the combustion of the oil in the burners of the heating-stove. 6o At the interior of the casing A is arranged a horizontal diaphragm D which is applied by slots at one end to keepers (1 attached to the rear-wall of the casing A, said diaphragm resting on a flanged seat 01 that is attached to the inside of the walls of the casing. The diaphragm D is provided with a central opening d of a size corresponding to the top-part of the heating stove, so that the heat generated by the flames of the same can readily act on the roasting-drum B.
The diaphragm D rests on the top of the heating-stove, but can be readily lifted owing to the hinge-connection with the casing, whenever it is desired to insert or remove the heating-stove, the vertical play of the diaphragm inits keepers d being sufficient to permit the removing of the fount from the bottom-opening of the casing, and the replacing of the same, as shown clearly in Fig. 3.
The diaphragm D is provided around the central opening d with small openings 01 so that heated air is supplied from the lower .part of the casing to the upper part of the same and thereby the regular draft of the heated products of combustion kept up. A fixed flue E is arranged between the frontwall and the cover A of the drum, through which flue the products of combustion are conducted to the outside. This flue is prefer 9o ably covered at its upper end with a suitable gauze-covering, so as to protect the flue to someextent-against the influence of wind and keep up an even draft through the same.
My improved peanut-roaster has the follow ing advantages: first, that a high degree of heat is generated in the upper part of the easing in which the roasting-drum is located owing to the arrangement of the horizontal diaphragm which compels the air to pass me through the openings in the bottom of the casing to the burners and through the openings in the diaphragm to the upper part of the casing; secondly, that, by the arrange ment of the discharge flue, the products of combustion are passed off, while the flames of the heater are protected against the influence of strong winds; thirdly, owing to the hingeconnection of the diaphragm with the casing, the heating stove can be readily removed from the casing of the roaster for being refilled with oil and replaced in the same by simply lifting the diaphragm by the upper part of the stove until the fount is removed or replaced in position when the diaphragm assumes by gravity its position on its seat and on the top of the stove.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. Apeanut roaster composed of an exterior casing or shell, provided "with a top-cover, a hinged front-lid anda bottom having an opening for the fount of a heating stove, and smaller draft-openings, a roasting-drum supported in the upper part of the casing, a horizontal diaphragm hinged to the rear wall of the casing below the drum and provided with a central opening fitting the top of the stove, and with smaller side openings, and a flue arranged at the upper part of the casing and extending along the front wall of the same, substantially as set forth. 2. A peanut-roaster, composed of an exterior casing or shell provided with a cover, a bottom 35 having an opening for the fount of the heating stove and smaller draft openings, a hinged front-lid in said casing, a horizontal dia' phragm hinged at one end to the interior of the casing below the drum, said diaphragm resting 011 the top of said stove and having a central opening fitting closely over the top of the same, the opposite end of the diaphragm being supported on a flanged seat attached to the inside of the walls of the casing, by means of which seat the diaphragm is held in position when the stove is removed for refilling or other purposes, smaller side openings in said diaphragm adapted to supply the heated air from the lower part of the casing to the upper part of the same, thereby producing a regular draft of the heated, air, and a flue arranged at the upper part of the casing, substantially as set forth.
