PEANUT-HEATER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 478,721, dated July 12, 1892.

Be it known that I, EDWARD TAUNAY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York,haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Peanut-Heaters, of which the following is a speciiication.

Thisinvenlion relates to certain improvements in peanut-heaters of that class in which the peanut-holding vessel is supported in a water-bath, which latter' is heated by a petroleum -stove. Attempts were made to heat peanut-heaters of this class by petroleumstoves heretofore, but without success, as the tierce winds to which the heaters are exposed in the streets during the winter season pass through the air-supply holes at the lower part of the heaterand extinguish the burner-flames of the same. Another objection was that the fount of lthe petroleum-stove, being supported inside of the lower compartmentof the peanut-heater, was subjected to heat in the same, so as to endanger the safety ot' the heater.

.lhe object of this invention is to furnish an improved peanut-heater in which the before-mentioned objections are overcome and the heater adapted to be heated by a petroleum-stove in such a manner that the flames cannot be extinguished by gusts of wind while still a uniform supply of air to the burn ers of stove, and thereby a perfect combustion of the oil, is kept up; and the invention consists of a peanut-heater the lower compartment of which is provided in the bottom with an opening in which the fount of the petroleumris supported and with vair-supply openings ateach side of the fount-opening and with an upwardly-extending flue formed at the upper part of the compartment, said flue V extending along the water bath, so as to permit the escape of the products of combustion. In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective View of my improved peanut-heater. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of the lower compartmentof the same in line 3 3, Fig. 2. l

Referring to the drawings, A represents the heating compartment of a peanutheater, which compartment is constructed of suitable sheet metal and provided with a hinged front lid A', so as topermit of opening the compartment at the front for giving access to the petroleum heating-stove B, that is located in the saine. The bottom of the heating-compartment A is provided wit-li an oblong opening b, in which the fount of the petroleum heating-stove B is supported, said fount being either cast with a shoulder or made tapering, so as to [it snugly into the opening Z). Any approved construction ot' petroleum-stove may be used. On the conipartment A is supported a water bath C, in which the peanut-holding vessel D, with its hinged cover D', is supported. The Water bath is provided with a'safety-pipe and vent for the escape of the steam. The arrangement of the water bath in Ythe heating-compartment and of the rotating vessel in the water bath are well known and form no part of this invention.

The bottom of the heating-compartment A is provided at each side of the forint-opening h with air-openings h', through which the air required for combustion is drawn in to the burners of the stove B. The products of combustion are conducted off through an upwardly-extending flue F, that is preferably arranged at the upper rear wall of the heating-compartment and extended alongside of the rear wall of the water bath, the discharge- [lue F being covered at its upper end by a detachable covering screen f, so that it imparts a better finish to the flue and prevents thedroppingof anypeanut-shells orother matter into the lower compartment. The screen also prevents to s'orne extent the effect ot blasts of wind on the flue, so as not to interfere with the discharge of the products of combustion.

The number and size of the air-supply holes in the bottom compartment have to be proportioned to the Width of the flue, so that the free and unobstructed egress of the products can take place. As the air holes are arranged in the bottom of the heating-compartment, the air cannot be forced with any pressure into the interior of the compartment sufcient to extinguish the burner-flames, so that the heating of the peanuts can be kept up even in the most stormy and windy weather.

claim as new and desire to secure by Letters I Patent- In a peanut-heater, the combination, with a heating-compartment, of a petroleum heatingstove in said compartment, a Water bath supported on said eoinpartment,a peanut-roasting vessel in said Water bath, the bottom of the heatinghcompartment being provided with an opening for supporting the fount of the heating-stove and with air-supply openings alongside of said fou nt, and an upwardly-extending ue attached at the upper end of one of the side Walls of the heating-compartment and extending alongside oi the Water bath,

substantially as set forth.
