Be it known that I, CLIFTON H. DAVIS, of

Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain useful Improvements in Bottle-Stoppers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

This invention has relation .to anew and novel improvement in bottle stoppers, the object being to provide a bottle stopper that shall be more particularly adapted to be used in combination with liquid vending bottles.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows a view of a bottle provided with my improved stopper. Fig. 2 is a central sectional view thereof, while Fig. 3 shows a top view thereof.

Number2 represents the upper neck of an ordinary bottle, which is provided with a thread 3 forming part thereof. These bottles may, of course, be of any suitable size. Working around the threaded end of the bottle is a preferably metallic collar 1, provided with the flange t extending over the top of the bottle. This collar 1 may be of cast or stamped metal, or of any other suitable material, and upon two diametrically opposite parts is provided with the two similar outwardly extending ears 5 5. These ears 5 are under out below so as to form an acute angular shoulder, adapted to hold and engage the slotted ends of the metallic retaining strip 6 of any suitable metal or material. This strip 6 is provided with two similar terminal openings 7, as shown in Fig. 1 which are adapted to ride over and be secured below the ears 5.

The operation of my device will be as follows: The bottles being closed, are all provided with threaded necks adapted to be engaged by corresponding threaded caps 1 with 'which suitable corks a; have been securely fixed. Now, if the bottle has been filled, the cork or stopper w is forced into the neck of the bottle until the collar 1 engages the thread 3 when it is simply necessary to thread the collar 1 upon the neck of the bottle. As the collar is screwed upon the neck, the cork is of course fed into the neck of the bottle until the upper flange 4 finds a seating. It will be seen that the advantage of my threaded collar is that the cork can be made considerably larger than the neck, so as to insure a perfectly air tight closing as by means of the thread great power can be exerted at a little expenditure of force so that even a woman or child could secure these corks or remove them.

In vending bottles containing effervescent charged or spirituous liquors from which small quantities are taken, this stopper is particularly valuable, as the bottle can always be securely closed. Further, in beer and wine bottles, the device presents an advantage over the stoppers usually employed, in that the cork can be readily removed without destroying the same, so that there is a saving in the stopper; further, in the fact that there is no puncture of the cork in removing it.

Now, having thus described my said invention and the best method known to me for preparing the same, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent, is-
