Be it known that we, JAMES PLEUKHARP and WILLIAM K. LIGGETT, citizens of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrel-Setting-Up Devices; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full,

. clear, and exact description of the invention,

such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to devices to facilitate the setting up of barrels to receive the hoops or temporary band at one end prior to heading and trussing the same.

Another important feature is to enable the barrel being readily removed from the device after it is set up and obviating the necessity of having to elevate the same vertically the proper distance to clear the band.

The invention consists essentially of a self righting stand which is capable of being tilted in any direction to enable the barrel being readily removed therefrom and which will antomatically assume an upright position the instant the barrel is removed and the stand released.

The invention also consists of a stand having a support for the barrel head adj ustably connected therewith so that the position of the head of the barrel may be adapted to the height of the croze in the stave, whereby the chamfer will readily enter the croze.

The invention further consists of the novel features and the peculiar construction and combination of the parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawing, which is a side elevation, partly in section, of the invention.

The device comprises, essentially, the base A, a support 0 and standards or legs B connecting the support 0 with the base A. The baseA is smaller at the lower end and is of sufficient mass to produce a self-righting of the device or stand when thesame is released after having been tilted on its side to enable the barrel being readily removed therefrom after ithas been set up. The top, or larger end of the base is in a plane parallel with the plane of the smaller or lower edge and the formation of the side between these upper and lower ends is not essential to the efficiency and successful operation of the device. In the preferred form of construction the base has the appearance of an inverted truncated cone resting on the smaller end.

A groove or channel D is provided on the top side of the base A to receive the lower ends of the staves E and is formed between a ring Fat the outer edge of the base and an elevated portion G which rises from the base A and is centrally disposed thereon. The upper inner corner of the ring E is chamfered to give an increased width to the receiving end of the groove or channel D and the opposing side of the elevated portion G slopes inward to approximately conform to a slant of the staves and also increases the width of the receiving end of the said groove or channel D. The elevated portion G receives and forms a support for the standards B a short distance from the base A and strengthens and braces the said standards.

The support 0 for the barrel head H is slightly smaller than the said head to permit the cham fer thereof to readily enter the croze in the stave. This support is attached to the upper end of the standards B B and is elevated or lowered to adapt the barrel head to the position of the croze in the stave. The standards B B may be of any approved form of construction which will form a positive and firm connection between the support 0 and the base A and admit of the said support 0 being readily elevated and lowered. As shown these standards are constructed in two parts I) b which have their inner or opposing ends oppositely threaded, and a sleeve 17 connecting the opposing ends of the parts I) b, the said sleeve having respectively a right and left hand thread at its ends to correspond with the right and left hand thread on the inner ends of the parts I) b. By turning the sleeve 12 to the right or the left the support 0 may be elevated or lowered as required.

The stand or device being constructed as herein set forth and shown is utilized in the following manner: The barrel head H is placed upon the support G and the staves E set up around the same, the lower ends being inserted in the groove or channel D and the upper ends resting against the edge of the head the chamfer of which enters the croze provided in the same. After the barrel has been set up one or more hoops are slipped upon the top or smaller end thereof to bind the parts together. Instead of these hoops a temporary band may be provided to bind the parts together. The barrel having been set up and bound in the manner aforesaid is removed from the device or stand by tilting the latter on its sides when the barrel can be readily removed. After the barrel has been removed and the stand released, the said stand will right itself automatically by means of the mass of the base A.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

-1. A self righting barrel forming device comprising a base of proper mass having its lower end made smaller and adapted to be tilted upon its side, substantially as described for the purpose set forth.

2. A self righting barrel forming device comprising a base having its lower end made smaller and adapted to be tilted on its side, and a barrel head support connected with the said base, substantially as set forth.

3. In a self righting barrel forming device comprising a base having its lower end made smaller, and having a groove or channel on its top side to receive the lower end of the stave, substantially as set forth.

4:. A self righting barrel forming device comprising a base having its lower end made smaller, and having an outer ring and a centrally disposed elevated portion between which a groove or channel is formed, a support, and adjustable standards connecting the support with the base and strengthened by the said centrally disposed elevated portions, substantially as set forth.
