UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
THOMAS ORME GOLLES, OF MANCHESTER, ENGLAND.
S EAT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 513,484, dated January 30, 1894. Application filed May 9, 1893. Serial No. 473,503. (No model.) Patented in England October 2'], 1892, No. 19,288.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS ORME OoLLEs,
a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, and a resident of Higher Broughton, Manchester, in the county of Lancaster,England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Outside Seats for Tram-Oars, Omnibuses, and Similar Vehicles and other Exposed Seats, (for which I have obtained Letters Patent in Great Britain, numbered 19,288, dated October 27, 1892,) of which the following is a specifieation.
My invention relates to improvements in outside seats for tram-cars, omnibuses and similar vehicles and other seats exposed to the weather such as garden seats, deck and boat seats, 'and the like, and the chief object of my invention is to insure in all conditions of weather a dry seat for the person about to occupy it.
In the drawings: Figure 1, is an end View of the strips or slats composing the seat and the bar connecting them. Fig. 2, is a similar view showing the slats or strips reversed. Fig. 3, is a plan view of the seat.
The seat strips 01 have pins or dowels d fitted in metal plates h which are secured to the frame a of the seat by screws 0/. At one end of the seat outside the plate h is a plate of metal 2' which is carried on dowel pins 01 secured to the strips. The plate 2' is provided with upwardly extending ears to engage the pins (1 and said plate is secured say to the two end strips by prolonging the pins d and screwing nuts j on to them; in this way the strips can all be reversed simultaneously by raising any one of them and to facilitate this the middle strip is shown cut away at k; Figs. 1 and 2 show the strips 01 in two positions and also illustrate the connections of the strips 01 to the plates h and 2'.
. Having now particularly described and as certained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s-
In combination in a seat, the frame, the series of slats having pins projecting from their ends near the front and rear edges of said slats and in the same plane, one set. of said pins being journaled in the frame to pivot the slats eccentrically and the other set being connected with an operating bar, said bar having upwardly projecting ears to connect with the pins projecting from the ends of the slats substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of-two witnesses.
THOMAS ORME COLLES.
