UMBRELLA-SPRING.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 513,277, dated January 2 1894- Application filed J ly 29, 1893- To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, CHARLES A. PRICE and SAMUEL S. FRETZ, citizens of the United States, both residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Umbrella or Parasol Springs, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.

Our invention consists of a novel spring and accompanying plate for controlling the runner of an umbrella or parasol when the latter is in either open or closed condition, as hereinafter set forth.

Figure 1 represents a side elevation, and Fig. 2 represents a vertical section of an umbrella or parasol spring embodying our invention, the stick being in side elevation in Fig. 1, and sectional in-Fig. 2.. Figs. 3 and 4 represent perspective views of portions thereof.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.

Referring to the drawings: A designates the stick of an umbrella or parasol, the same having therein a longitudinallyextending groove or kerf B.

O designates a bent plate, in the bend of which is a slot D, and on the side of one of the limbs is a circular flange E, and an opening F adjacent thereto.

G designates the spring or catch formed of wire for the runner of the umbrellar or parasol, the same consisting of the limbs H and J, the cross bar K joining said limbs, the eye L at the end of the limb H, and the foot M at the end of the limb J, the eyeL in the present case being open.

N designates a pin which is passed through the stick, the eye L and the opening F, it being seen that the eye L is seated on the plate 0, and guarded by the circular flange E, and as the pin passes through the eye, the spring is firmly connected with the plate 0, whereby when the spring is in its outward position, the bar K forms a shoulder for firmly supporting or engaging with the runner without liability of the spring to close improperly or acciden- Serial No. 481,827. The thrust or strain of the spring is received by the bottom wall of the kerf l3, since the foot M rests on said wall, as seen in Fig. 2, and the wall C of the bend of the plate 0 below the slot D prevents outward motion of said foot, and consequently of thesprlng. Furthermore, the spring has great resiliency, whereby it may be pushed in when so desired in order to release the runner, said spring afterward quickly flying-out, or returningto its normal and operative position. Again, while the pin N serves to connect the spring with the plate about the flange E as the arms of the spring, said pin also serves to connect the plate With the stick and prevent displacement of the same. It'will also be seerrthat the spring and plate are of. simple and me pensive construction, and occupy but little space of the stick. v

Having thus described our invention, what We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In an umbrella and parasol fastening, a

bent plate with a slot in the bend thereof and a flange on the inner face of one side 1n combination with a spring formed of llmbshaving a connecting cross bar, one of said limbs having at its end an eye and the other limb having a foot, said eye fitting wlthin said flange and said spring working in said slot, said parts being combined substantially as described. n 2. An umbrella stick with a kerf there1n,a plate with a bend having a slot therein, and a flange with an adjacent opening, a sprlng formed of limbs with a connecting cross bar, one of said limbs having an eye, and the other limb having a foot, and a pin passing through said stick, eye and opening, and said foot bearing against the lower wall of sa d kerf, said parts being combined substantially as described.
