UNITED STATES PATENT OFF-ICE.
JAMES B. HUNTER, OF CATO, NEW YORK.
FIRE-APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 513,265, dated January 23, 1894.
Application filed June 21,1893. Serial No. 478,401- (No model.) 7
To 00% whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES B. HUNTER, of Cato, in the county of Cayuga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fire Apparatus, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to mechanisms for opening and closing-valves, having a sliding and reciprocating gate, adapted to open or close the Water-way, particularly when the valve is operated by the strain applied to tire hose to open it and let on the water, either in conjunction with, as a part of, or separate from a hose-reel or hose carrier.
My object is to produce animproved valve vided whereby the strain or pull upon the hose will operate the main-lever and let on the water; means, as abasket, being provided in, or by which, the hose is folded and held or carried when not in use; means being also provided upon the main-lever for supporting the hose-pipe.
My invention consists in the several novel features of construction and operation hereinafter described and which are specifically set forth in the claims hereunto annexed. It is constructed as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1, is a side elevation of my apparatus, closed. Fig. 2, is a like view of the same, open. Fig. 3, is a top plan thereof. Fig. 4:, is aplan of the front perspective thereof. Fig. 5, is a plan perspective of the has ket and its supports, detached.
A--, is a water pipe connected to any source of water supply.
B, is a straight-way valve having a sliding or reciprocating gate, of ordinary construction, to which the stem --ais connected. Upon the bottom of the valve a block is pivoted having on its ends the trunnions, or bearings -b. Upon these bearings the cam-lever c is journaled, comprising side bars and cross connections between them, one of which is said block, the rear ends of said arms being pivotally connected to the side rails cof the valve-lever, which stand astride of the pipe A- and converge upwardly and at the top are pivotally connected to a loose sleeve d upon the valve stem, and -cl'- is a spring engaging with said sleeve and with the collar d upon the valve stem, and operating to hold the valvegate closed against accidental openings. The outer ends of the side bars of the cam-lever c are bifurcated substantially as shown, and in one arm, as e, a notch or transverse groove c' is cut, of substantially the form shown in the drawings, having the overhanging lip eand creating in said bars, bearings for the roller -h over which the hose D- passes and is supported against kinking, and the leverage exerted by the strain upon the hose, forces the cam-lever down, which raises the valve lever and the valve stem and gate and opens the valve. As the block upon which the cam-lever bars are mounted is pivoted upon the valve-body, and as the sleeve -d is free to rotate upon the valve stem, the cam-lever and its connections to the valve stem, including said block, can together be swung laterally to a certain extent when the strain on the hose is out of a direct'line with the valve. can be removed whenever desired, by raising the hose and lifting the roller out of its bearlngs.
E-, is a hose carrier, or basket, having an open top, a front partially closed, and closed back, bottom and ends, and is usually constructed of wire work. It is supported by a rod, bent centrally to form a loop -mof sufficient size to fit onto the lower end of the valve body, then bent to form the rings or coils m' which fit over the trunnions b inside of the cam lever side bars, then bent angularly, as at -m" and extending downward and having its ends secured to the basket, and in this the hose is folded, and the The roller h bars.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 1. The combination with a valve having a reciprocating gate and valve stem secured 3. The combination with a valve having a reciprocating gate and a valve stem, and a hose connected to said valve, of a bifurcated cam-lever pivoted upon said valve, a valvelever pivotally connected to said lever, a
sleeve upon the valve stem connected to said lever, and a spring engaging with the sleeve and stem.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 8th day of June, 1893.
JAMES B. HUNTER.
In presence of- G. W. SMITH, HOWARD P. DENISON.
