UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOS RAMOS POWER, OF MALAGA, SPAIN.
APPARATUS FOR PREVENTING FERMENTATION.
SPECIFICATION forming part ofvrLetter s Patent No. 513,199, dated January 23, 1894. Application filed March 3, 1893. Serial No. 464,63l. (No model.)` Patented in Spain July 18, 1892,11'0. 13,462.
To @ZZ whom, it may concern,..-
Be it known that I, Jos RAMos POWER, a subgect of the King of Spain, residing at Malaga, Spain, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparat-us for Preventing the Fermentation of W ort, Wines, and other Liquids by Fumigating the Same with Pure Sulphur, of which the following is a specification.
Patent has been taken out in Spain, No. 13,462, dated Jniy 1s, 1892.
I t is the object of my invention to provide a slmple and effective apparatus for subjecting wines, wort and other liquids to the fumes of sulphur or the like said apparatus being constructed and arranged to continue the fum1gation for any desired length of time, the wine or other liquid falling in a divided cond1t1on pr spray while the fumes ofv the sulphur rise and fumigate the falling spray effectlvely. This Ltreatment 'of the wine or other liquid will prevent thc same from fermenting. Y
The apparatus is shown in the accompanying drawings, in whichmore vats A, B, which as shown may be made.
of masonry below the level of theground or fioor, a furnace brickwork N adjacent to the pipe E, extending over the receiving vats,-A,
B, and having the depending suction pipes A', B provided with cocks C, D, said pipe E,
being connected with the suction end of the suction and force pump F.
The hearth or furnace above referred to is opened at its lower part and through its ash box a draft 0f natural air is permitted which keeps alive the sulphur dame, said sulphur being placed, either in lumps or pulverized,
in an iron or earthenware movable plate P resting on a fixed grate provided for this purpose in said furnace. These vapors or fumes of pure sulphur are carried up to be introduced in the vat, as described, said vat being provided with fourteen or more of the boards perforated at short intervals, through which the wort or liquids descend or flow down, like rain, from one to another, the first or upper board being provided with a piece of thick loosely woven linen through which the wort passes and which serves, in the first place to takeoff from said wort the thick particles it may contain, and,A secondly, to prevent the rapid escape of the sulphur fumes.
The operation is as followsz-When the fountain A (Fig. l) is filled with wort, the cockC is opened, and the cock D remains closed, and as the pump is operated the liquid passes through the pipe E into the pump body F and is discharged through the pipe G, and then it is emptied into the piece of linen H, and asit flows from board to board it descends slowly through the sulphur fumes or vapors and becomes impregnated with the same, and as it reaches the lower part of the vat is readily discharged through the rubber pipe J, by which it is carried to the empty receptacle B. As before explained, the natural air draft through the bottom of the furnace, takes place at the point K. v
As has already been explained, supposing the fountain A to be filled with wort, the
pump is operated until said fountain be' comes empty and the fountain B will be filled it being fumigated ywith sulphur once, but since one fumigation with sulphur is not sufficient in order to prevent fermentation, a second fu mi gation maybe eected as desired, by simply closing the cock'O, opening the cock D and by transferring the lower end of the rubber pipe J to the fountain A and thus -t-he pump will go on operating until it fills again the fountain A, whereby the wort, wine or any other liquid which'may be under treatment is fumigated' twice with sulphur and the operation may be repeated until the required degree or quarftity of sulphur is applied to the liquid.
Any suitable form of pump may be used, and if desired the liquid 'may be introduced IOO Vinto the top of the spraying vat in any other desired Way as by hand and instead-of the series of perforated partitions for spraying the liquid any other suitable means maybe used.
The receiving vats may be of dierent form and arrangement from those shown.
I claim- In combination, the elevated spraying tank, the brickwork for supporting the same, the furnace arranged within the brickwork, the pipe M leading up from the furnace into the lower part of the spraying tank, the tWO vats A, B, arranged below the spraying tank, the loose pipe J extending from the lower end of the spraying tank and adapted to be transferred from one vat to the other, the force pump having a pipe connecting with the upper JOS RAMOS POWER.
