FOLDING SQUARE.
No. 512,436. Paten-'ted Jan.. 9, 1894 ||||||l|1||'l|||lllllllllllllllll 5?. Q/Llfgj.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HERVEY kC. GOODGION, OF vNEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WILLIAM SODER, OF ORANGE, NEW JERSEY.
, FOLDING SQUARE.
srncrrIcArIoN forming part of Letters Patent 1ro/512,436, dated January 9, 1894.
Application {iled May 1. 1893. Serial No. 472,496. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HEEVEY C. GOODGION, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Squares, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of a square formed of limbs which arepivotally connected, whereby they may be folded, their cnstruction being such that when the limbs are unfolded the inner and outer angles of the square are left perfect or unbroken, as will be hereinafter set forth.
Figures 1, 2, 3, and 4. represent views of opposite faces of a square embodying my invention, the parts beingl respectively in operative and folded positions. Fig. 5 represents an irregular section thereof,- on line 5-5, Fig. 3.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to 1the drawings: A and B designate the limbs of a square which are primarily'separated.
Projecting laterally from one side of th limb A, near one end thereof, is a circular ear C, to which isr pivoted the other limb B, the latter having a circular `recess D, on its side to receive said ear, and permit the same to play therein, it being noticed that the inner side Cl of the ear C, extends at a right angle to the side A of the limb A, and the portion D of the wall of the recess D, is a right-line continuation of the side B of the limb B.
At the end of each limb and on one side thereof is a recess Dzwhich receives thetongue E, it being noticed that the tongue of one limb enters the recess of the other limb, thus forming a lap-joint and iush surfaces for the adjacent portions of the limbs.
In the limb B is a counter-sunk opening F, and in the limb'Ais a threaded opening G, said openings receiving the screw H, whereby the limbs may be connected as one. It will be seen that the inner and outer angles J of the square are preserved, they being unoccupied, and ythus the square may render the same v service as one of integral or intact nature.-
When the screw is removed, the limbs may be folded side by side, the square thus being placed in narrow compass and compact form,
convenient for carrying in the pocket or the tool box, or for purposes of expressage, mailing, &c.,it being noticed that as in Fig. 5, the opposite faces of the square are Hush and dat, and the limbs occupy small compass. When the limbs are in operative position, the shoulders K, K, ofthe same form abutments for the opposite parts thereof, whereby the limbs may be set firm and strong against each other.
The size of the square or the scale thereon may be varied as desired.
What I claim as my invention, and for which I desire to secure Letters Patent, is
1. A folding square having a limb with a projecting circular ear, a recess and a tongue at one end, and another limb with a circular recess to receive said ear, a recess on one side atit-s end to receive the tongue of the other limb, each of said limbs having an inclined shoulder against which the ends of the limbs abut, and the-ear C having a side C at a right angle to the side A of the limb A, said parts being combined substantially as described.
2. A folding square having a limb with a .projecting circular ear, a recess and a tongue on one end, and another limb forming an unobstructed inner angle therewith, and provided with a recess to receive said ear, a recess to receive said tongue and having a tongue fitting in the recess of the other ear, each of said limbs having inclined shoulders against which the inclined ends ot' said tongues abut, and a screw secured in a countersunk opening in one of said limbs, and a threaded openingin the-other, said parts being combined substantially as described.
