WILLIAM J. WALKER, ors'r. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 512,418, dated January 9, 1894.
Application filed August 30, 1893. Serial No. 484,357. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. WALKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention has relation to improvements in wrenches and consists in the novel arrangement and combination of parts more particularly set forth in the specification and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a combined side elevation and vertical section showing my complete invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same; and Fig. 3 is a vertical cross section taken on the line 00-00 of Fig. 1.
The object of my invention is to construct a simple wrench by dispensing with teeth, screw threads and the like for holding the movable jaw.
In carrying out my invention I employ a stationary jaw having an extension and handle carried thereby, an incline formed on said extension, a movable jaw carrying a cam pivoted transversely to the movement of the jaw, means attached to the cam and projecting from the jaw for operating the same and other details of construction hereinafter fully described.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the stationary jaw, 2 an extension forming a part of the same, and 3 a handle attached to said extension or forming apart thereof. Formed on the upper surface of said extension is a groove or depression 4: which inclines gradually from the stationary jaw l to the handle 3 and with which co-operates a cam carried by the movable jaw now to be described.
5 represents the movable jaw having an opening 6 formed therein for the passage of the extension 2 of the stationary jaw, and located above said opening and in communication with the same is a transverse opening 7 which receives the cam 8 attached to the shaft 9. To one end of the said shaft is secured a thumb nut 10 and is located on the outside of the jaw 5 for manipulating the cam by hand, and formed in said jaw and in communication with the opening 7 is a cavity 11 which receives the opposite end of the shaft 9. Passing through the said shaft and the cam is a pin 12 which keys the two together whereby the cam is made to turn when the thumb nut is manipulated.
To adjust the movable jaw 5 to and from the stationary jaw the thumb nut and accordingly the cam is turned out of contact with the groove formed in the upper surface of the extension 2 whereby the said jaw is free to be moved or adjusted. After the jaw 5 has been adjusted to its proper position the cam is brought in contact with the groove 4 and is held against movement.
The object of operating the cam transversely to the direction of the movement of the jaw is to prevent slipping of" the cam on the incline or groove with which it co-operates, such slipping being frequent withwrenches Where the cam operates longitudinally on said incline orgroove. The slipping of the cam in the present invention is prevented also by reason of said cam which is transverse to the incline or groove, alwaysacting at right angles to the surface of the incline or groove with which it comes in contact.
Having described my invention, what I claim isl. A wrench comprising a stationary jaw, an extension forming a part of the same, an incline formed on said extension, a movable jaw embracing said extension and a cam carried by said movable jaw and operating transversely to the direction of said incline, substantially as set forth.
2. A wrench comprising a stationary jaw, an extension forming a part of the same, an inclined groove formed in said extension, a movable jaw, a cam carried by said movable jaw and operating transverse to the direction of the movement of the jaw, and means attached to said cam and projecting from the jaw for operating the cam, substantially as set forth.
3. A wrench consisting of a stationary jaw 1, an extension 2 forming a part of the same, an inclined groove 4. formed in the upper surface of said extension, a jaw5 movable upon said extension, an opening 7 formed in said movable jaw, a cavity also formed in said jaw and in communication with said opening, a
10 ried by said movable jaw transverse to said incline and operating substantially at right angles to the surface of the incline, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signaturein the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM J. WALKER.
