PATENT WILLIAM A. TURNER, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO EDMUND CONVERSE, OF SAME PLACE.
DIE-PRESS.
SPECIFICATIONl forming part of Letters Patent No. 512,415, dated January 9, 1894. Application tiled July '7, 1891. Serial No.398,665| (No model.)
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. TURNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Die-Presses, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same, and in whichy Figure l, represents such portions of a die press as are necessary to fully illustrate the nature of my present invention,.the figure showing the die boxes and dies and also the reciprocating punch, or sleeve, by which the blank is cut from the metal sheet in central sectional view, the several operating parts being shown in their normal position. Fig. 2, represents the same, showing the position of the operating parts as the blank is about to be brought between the reciprocating punch andl the lower die. Fig. 3, represents the same, with the several parts in the position assumed at the completion of the operation of compressing the blank between the reciprocating punch and the lower die and cutting a circular disk from its center. Fig. 4, represents the same, showing the position of the several parts after the reciprocating dies have been partially reversed and the completed blanklifted from the lower die, and Fig. 5, represents a bottom view of the latching mechanism; and Fig. 6, is a view of the sliding rods F, F', with the sleeves F3,
shown in sectional view.
Similar letters refer to similar parts in the different figures.
My present invention relates to certain irnprovements in die presses employed in cutting and stamping sheet metal in which two dies having coincident axes are employed and it consists in providing means, whereby the blank is held against the end of the reciproeating punch in its passage from one to the other of the dies.
The general construction and operation of a die press for cutting and stamping sheet metal are so well known that in the accompanying drawings I have shown only such portions as are necessary to illustrate the nature of my invention.
Referring to the drawings the line A, A, denotes the upper face of a bed or table upon which the die boxes B, C, are supported one placed above the other leavingv an open space D, between them. The upper die box B, contains a die B', the diameter of its upper portion at'B3, being equal to thediame ter of the reciprocating cutting sleeve E, and the lower portion of thedie B', having its diameter reduced forming a shoulder B3. Within the sleeve E, is a reciprocating punch E', the sleeve E, and punch E', having a reciprocating motion by means of suitable actuating cams in the ordinary and well known method employed inv die presses of this class. In the die box C, I place the die C', with its axis coincident with the axis of the die B', provided with a plain upper surface and having a concentric opening O2. l Extending below the lower die box C, is a tube O3, having annular flan ges C4, and O3. The flanges C4, and C5, are provided with coincident holes forming ways for the sliding rods F, F', which pass through coincident holes in the die box C, and lower die C. The lower portions of the rods F, F', are screw-threaded as shown in Fig. 6, to receive the screw-threaded sleeves F3, and nuts F3. Between the ends of the sleeves F2, and nuts F3, is securely clamped a yoke F4, by which the two rods F, an'd F', are connected. The upper ends of the sleeves F2, are provided with flanges F5, carrying upon their upper surfaces rubber washers F6, and between the lianges F3, of the sleeves F3, and the annular flange C5, I place the spiral springs F7, by which the rods F, F', are forced upward in the position shown in Fig. l, with their upper ends ushwith the upper surfaces of the die B', the screw-threaded sleeves F3, and nuts F3, allowing the rods F, F', to be vertically adjusted to bring their upper ends in the desired position with upper dies B', of varying thicknesses. The rod F, is provided with an annular groove G, to receive the end of a latch G', which is pivoted at G3, upon the under side of the ange C4, and is pressed against the rod F, by means of a spring G3, acting against a lug G4, upon the iiange C4, the tension of the spring G3, being adjusted bythe screw G3, held in the lug G4. The latch` G', is provided with a notch G, to re- IOC ceive a cam plate G1, having an inclined surface G11, and attached to a sliding rod G, sliding in ways in the lower die box C, and the annular flange C5. The rod G9, has a ixed' collar G10, between which and the flange C5, is a spring G11, by which the rod G9, is forced upward bringing its upper end flush with the upper surface of the upper die B', its upward movement being limited by means of a nut G12, which strikes the flange C5, and is adjustable upon the screw-threaded section G13, of the rod G1. The rod G1 passes through the lower die box C, and through the upper die B', in position to be struck by the reciprocating sleeve E, and forced downward in the position shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4, carrying the cam plate G7, below the pivoted latch G', thereby allowing the spiral spring G3, to carry the latch into engagement with the sliding rod F.
The operation is as followsz--A metal sheet H, is placed upon the upper surface of the upper die B', when the reciprocating sleeve E, moves downward cutting out a circular blank and carrying it downward upon the shoulder B3, and pushing downward the sliding rods F, F', and G1', the downward movement of the rod G1 being sufficient to carry the cam plate G1, below the latch G', so that the spring G3 will press the latch against the rod F. The sleeve E, remains at rest holding the edge of the circular blank between the face of the sleeve E, and the shoulder B3, of the upper die B'. A continued downward movement of the punch E', pushes the circular blank through the upper die B', pushing the rods F, F', still further downward into the po sition shown in Fig. 2. The farther continued movement of the central punch E will compress -the blank between the face of the punch E', and the upper surface of the lower die C', the concentric projection E2, entering the opening C2, and cutting out the circular disk I, Fig. 3, which is delivered through the tube C3, the position of the several parts being shown in Fig. 3. The die E', is then reversed, allowing the rods F, F', to move upward and lift the completed blank from the lower die C', until their movement is limited by the latch G', as shown in Fig. 4. The rod GD, is held in its lowest position bythe dwell of the sleeve E, until the punch E', has reached a position in its upward movement with its lower surface in the same plane as the upper surface of the upper die B', as shown in Fig. 4, when the sleeve E, is raised allowing the rod G9, to be moved upward by the spring G11, thereby carrying the cam plate G1, against the latch G', withdrawing it from the annular notch G, and releasing the sliding rods F, F', when they will assume their normal position, as shown in Fig. 1, their upward movement being limited by the contact of the rubber washers F11, with the annular flange G1. The continued upward movement of the cutting sleeve E, and punch E' carries them above the upper die in lthe position shown in Fig. l, to receive another metal sheet when the operation is again repeated.
In the accompanying drawings the sliding rods F, F', are shown as of equal length and in the construction therein shown only two sliding rods are employed, but it will be obvious that one or more can be used if desired and the rods can be made of varying lengths with the longer rods made to yield.
I do not confine myself so far as the use of the sliding rods F, F', are concerned to the special form of latching mechanism as shown and described. Neither do I confine myself to the specific construction and arrangement of the sliding rods F, F', the essential feature of my invention consisting in the employment with a pair of dies having coincident axes and a reciprocating punch passing through one of said dies upon the other, of a gripping device by which the blank is held against the face of the reciprocating punch and thereby carried from one die to the other.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a die press, the combination of die boxes B and C placed one above the other with an intervening space D, die B' provided with a shoulder B3, die C' with an opening C2, the axis of said opening being concentric with the axis of said die B, reciprocating sleeve E, reciprocating die E' sliding concentrically in said sleeve and having a projection E2 in alignment with said opening C2 and reciprocating gripping rods F and F', by which the blank is held against the face of said reciprocating die in its passage between said die boxes, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a pair of dies, and a reciprocating punch acting conjointly with said dies, of gripping rods, by which the blank is held against the face of said reciprocating die, substantially as described, and a latching mechanism, consisting of a sliding latch plate adapted to engage said gripping rods, by which said gripping rods are held from upward movement for the purpose of supporting the completed blank out of contact with the lower of said dies, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a pair of dies having coincident axes and a reciprocating punch acting conjointly with said dies, of sliding rods, by which the blank is held against the face of said reciprocating punch, springs with their tension applied to raise said gripping rods, and a latching mechanism comprising a" pivoted latch G', spring G1, sliding rod G11, a latch actuating cam plate G7, substantially as described.
4. The combination with the sliding gripping rods F, F' ,provided with ascrew-threaded section, of screw-threaded sleeves F2, provided with flanges F11, springs F1, connecting yoke F4, and nuts F3, substantially as described.
5. The combination with a pair of dies having coincident axes, and a punch acting conjointly with said dies, of a concentric sleeve E, having a reciprocating motion and acting IOO IIO
their tension applied to said rods, whereby the blank is held in contact with the reciproeating punch during its downward motion, substantially as described.
