SELDEN S. CASEY, HUGH M. KAY, AND HUGH A. STRINGER, OF LONDON,
" CANADA.
GRIP WIRE-JFHENCE TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 512,360, dated January 9, 1894.
Application filed June 1,1893. Serial No. 476,303. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, SELDEN S. CASEY, HUGH M. KAY, and HUGH A. STRINGER, all subjects of the Queen of Great Britain, and all residents of the city of London, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have jointly invented a new and useful Grip lVire-Fence Tool, of which the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forms a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a tool for gripping a metal plate or washer on two wires crossing one another, to rigidly secure and bind them together; and it consists of the improved construction, and combination of parts of the same, as will be-hereinafter first fully set forth and described, and then pointed outin the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure Lisa side view of a tool embodying our invention. Fig. 2. is another View of same, looking at it from the side opposite to the lever. Fig. 3. is a detail side elevation of the plunger. Fig. 4. is a perspective view of the upper die plate. Fig. 5. is another View of same with a different die.
A, designates a lever, O, a plunger and, B, a standard formed with a solid overhanging head, I), and with an elongated groove or socket, D, in and by which the plunger, C, is guided and held as it is adjusted by the lever, A.
E, designates an elongated groove or recess in the upper face of the plunger, 0.
F, designates a plate riveted or otherwise rigidly secured to the overhanging head, I), and formed with the projection or die, G, which die is loosely fitted to the elongated groove or recess, E, in the upper face of the plunger, 0, and this die, G, may be in the forms shown in Figs. l. or 5. or in any other suitable form desired.
H, is a slot or opening formed through the standard, B, at right angles to the elongated groove, D.
I and 1, are steel cutters secured to, or formed integral with the standard, B, and plunger, 0, respectively, in such a position that they will cut any wire, &c., placed between them when the plunger is operated by the lever, A.
K, is a staple or nail puller, rigidly secured to, or formed integral with the standard, B.
L, is a combined guide and brace, which extends across the groove, D, and which is secured in the standard, B, on opposite sides of said groove, D, to assist in holding the plunger, 0, in place, and to brace the standard adjacent to the groove,D.
M, designates a hook which extends laterally from the standard, B, near the head, which hook assists in holding the metal plate or washer in place, and guides the wire to the die, G.
N, N, designate handles, parts of which only are shown, which handles may be secured to, or formed integral with the standard, B, and lever, A. The lever, A, is pivoted on the pivot pin, 6, secured to the standard, B, and the end, a, of this lever, A, projects through the slots or openings, H, O, in the standard, B, and plunger, 0, respectively, and the end, a, of the lever, A, where it projects through the slot or opening, 0, in the plunger, 0, is loosely fitted to this opening, so that by adjusting the lever, A, the plunger, 0, is adjusted lengthwise in the groove, D, to or from the die plate, F.
The operation is as follows:-The plate or washer and two wires are properly placed between the plunger, O, and the die plate, F, when the handle, N, of the lever, A, is closed on the handle, N,*of the standard, B. this grips the Wire strands and washer together between the plunger, 0, and the die plate, F.
Having thus described our invention, we claim- 1. A standard B, provided with a solid overhanging head I); an elongated groove D, and with a slot or opening H; and a plate F, provided with a projection or die G, in combination with a plunger G, provided with an elongated groove or recess E in its upper face, and with a slot or opening 0, and a lever A, havingthe portion (1 extending through the slots or openings 0 and H in the plunger 0 and standard B, respectively, substantially as shown and described and for the purpose specified.
2. A standard B, provided with a hook M, a solid overhanging head 0, an elongated groove D, and with a slot or opening II, and a plate F, provided with a projection or die G, in combination with a plunger 0, provided with an elongated groove or recess E in its upper face, and with a slot or opening 0, and a lever A, having the portion at extending through the slots or openings 0 and II in the plunger 0 and standard B, respectively, substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose specified.
3. Astandard B, provided with an elongated groove D, a slot H, and a cutter I, in combination with a plunger C, provided with acutter 1, and with a slot or opening 0, and a lever A, havingthe portion a extendingthrough the slots or openings 0 and H in the plunger C and standard B, respectively, substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose specified.
4-. A standard B, provided with an overhanging head b, a hook M, staple puller K, cutter I, elongated groove D, and slot or opening II, and a plate F, formed with a projection or die G, in combination with aplnnger C, provided with a cutter I, an elongated groove or recess E, and with a slot or opening 0, and a lever A, having a portion to extending through the slots or openings 0 and H in the plunger 0 and standard B, respectively, substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in the presence of the two undersigned witnesses.
