SHOVEL.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 512,238, dated January 2, 1894.

Be it known that 1, CHARLES TANNER, of Staunton, county of Augusta, State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shovels, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

The objectof my invention is to produce an improved s'hovel especially adapted for taking up ashes, or the like, which may be used as a sifter or as a solid shovel, as preferred.

In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of my shovel. Fig. 2 is a top plan View thereof, with the false bottom removed. Fig. 3 is a top plan view with the false bottom in place. Fig. 4 is an end elevation of the false bottom removed. Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of the false bottom.

Referring to the figures on the drawings: 1 indicates a shovel handle and 2 a bottom ,made of reticulated fabric, as for example,

iron or steel wire.

3 indicates a rib preferably of strong wire enfolded in the upper edge of the body and preferably bent, as illustrated, at the middle.

4 indicates a guard plate located in the rear wall of the body part, preferably made of tin or sheet iron and enfolding around its upper edge the wire 3.

5 indicates a back plate and 6 indicates bolts by which the handle and the back plate are securely fastened to the guard plate.

7 indicates a front edge guard overlapping the edge or end of the body part and having its sides firmly united around the end of the body, as by bolts 9. By this arrangement a strong serviceable shovel of reticulated fabric is produced, which is especially adapted for separating half burned coals from ashes. When it is desired to remove the finer ashes, as for example after the coal has been sifted, I employ a false bottom 10, shaped to fit closely within the body part 2 of the shovel and having everted flanges 11 around the outer edges, by which the false bottom is slipped into place within the body and is securely retained thereon.

I do not limit myself to the details of construction herein shown and described, except so far as they relate to the essential features of my invention as comprehended in the following claims.

What I claim is- 1. The combination with a reticulated body part, composing the bottom and side and rear walls, of a shovel, of a rib around the upper edge of the side and rear walls, and plates upon opposite sides of the rear wall enveloping it and the rib, of a false bottom having side walls and everted flanges adapted to overlap the top and front edges of the side walls, and the front edge of the bottom to retain the false bottom in place within ,the shovel, substantially as specified.

2. In a shovel, the combination with a reticulated body, composing the bottom and side and rear walls, of a pair of plates upon the opposite sides of the rear wall, a stiffening rib around the top of the side and rear walls, an edge guard on the front edge of the body part, a handle secured to the rear plates, a false bottom provided with everted flanges adapted to be retained within the shovel and to entirely cover the reticulated part of said shovel, the whole co-operating, when the false bottom isin place, to present an entirely solid interior surface to the shovel, substantially as specified.
