Be it known that 1, ROBERT E. GLASGOW, of Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented a new and Improved Wrapper-Holder, of which thefollowing is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to machines for manufacturing cigars and cigarettes by hand, and its object is to provide a new wrapper holder, which is simple and durable in construction, and arranged to greatly facilitate the wrapping of the tiller by hand, to produce high grade goods.
The invention consists of a movable rolling plate, and a movable clamping plate adapted to clamp the edge of the wrapper on the said rolling plate operatively connected therewith and to permit the operator to straighten out the wrapper and to roll in the filler.
The invention also consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be hereinafter described and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 isa plan view of the improvement; and Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
The improved wrapper holder is provided with a suitably constructed base A, carrying on opposite sides the brackets B, in which is held the transversely extending rod or shaft 0, engaged by eyes D formed on the under side of the rolling plate D, extending a suitable distance above the top surface of the base A. The end of the rolling plate D, next to the shaft 0, is provided with an extension D engaged at its outer end by a screw rod E, carrying the nuts E'and E between which is held a weight F.
The upper end of the screw rod E engages the end of a clamping plate G, likewise provided at its under side with eyes G engaging a transverse rod or shaft l-I, held in the brackets B, but located above and in the rear of the shaft 0. The forward end G of the clamping plate G is adapted to engage the edge of the wrapper placed on the rolling plate D so as to clamp the wrapperin place at the time a downward pressure is exerted on the rolling plate D. The contact between the wrapper rolling plate D and the edge G of the clamping plate G is near the shaft 0, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2.
When the device is in its normal position, as shown in full lines in Fig. 2, then the weight F overbalances the weight of the plates D and G,'so that the edge G of the plate G is a suitable distance above the top surface of the rolling plate D, and this distance can be increased or diminished by adjusting the nut E on the upper end of the screw rod E.
Thedevice is used as follows: The wrapper is placed on the rolling plate D so that one edge extends somewhat under the front edge G of the clamping plate G, and then the operator exerts a slight downward pressure on the wrapper and plate D, so that the latter swings downward and thereby causes a like movement of the clamping plate G, owing to the connection between the two plates by the screw rod E. The plate G, on swinging downward at its front edge, moves in contact with the edge of the wrapper on the'plate D, thus holding the wrapper in position on the plate to permit the operator to now unfold the wrapper and spread the same evenly over the rolling plate D. The operator then spreads the wrapper and rolls the filler into the wrap per in the usual manner, the rolling taking place toward the edge G and, when finally the wrapper has been rolled up to the edge G the operator slightly releases the pressure on the wrapper and plate D, to permit the weight F to press on the rear end of the plate D so as to cause the two plates to separate, whereby the'front edge G releases the clamped edge of the wrapper. The operator then continues the rolling-in process up the inclined clamping plate G, the previously clamped edge of the wrapper being thus used to finish up the cigar. It will be'seen that by this arrangement, the two plates D and G form a rolling surface for completely rolling in the filler in the wrapper. When the cigar is removed, the weight F completely opens the two plates D. and G, and the above described operation is repeated with a new wrapper and filler.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A wrapper holder, comprising a rolling plate adapted to move on a suitable support, a clamping plate supported adjacent to the rolling plate and likewise capable of moving on its support, and an operative connection between the two plates to cause them to move in unison to come in operative contact or separate the one fromthe other, substan= tially as set forth.
2. A wrapper holder, comprising a clamping plate adapted to move on a suitable support, a rolling plate supported beneath the clamping plate with its front end projecting beyond the front end of the clamping plate, the said rolling plate being likewise movable on its support, and an operative connection between the two plates to cause them to move 20 in unison, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. A wrapper holder, comprising a pivoted rolling plate, a pivoted clamping plate, having movment toward and from the rolling plate, and adapted to clamp the edge of the wrapper on the rolling plate, to permit the operator to straighten out the wrapper and to roll in the filler, and a weighted connection between the two plates to cause them to move in unison and resume their normal position, substantially as described.
4. A wrapper holder, comprising a pivoted rolling plate, a pivoted clamping plate adapted to engage and clamp one edge of the wrap per on the said rolling plate, an adjustable connection between the said plates, and a weight held on the said connection, substantially as shown and described.
