UNITED STATES MARGARET KILLEEN, OF HALIFAX, CANADA.
FlREESCAPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 511,896, dated January 2, 1894. Application filed August 24, 1893. Serial No. 484,001. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, it may concern/.-
Be it known that I, MARGARET KILLEEN, a subject of the Queen of Great- Britain, residing at Halifax, inthe Province of Nova Scotia and Dominion of Canada, have invented an Emergency Fire-Escape, of which the following, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
Figure l is a view in elevation of my fire escape in position for use. Figs. 2 and 3 show details.
The fire escape, made in six parts, is a rope ladder. Part (l) is a ladder Without attachments with rungs one foot apart stayed with Wooden rungs to keep its sides from coming together when in use. Part (2) is a heaving line attached to side of ladder. Part (3) is a strong connection of rope Woven into side of ladder through which said heaving line can Work up or down. Part (4) is two rubber balls each Weighing'six ounces; one attached securely to each end of said heaving line. Part (5) is two strong grappling hooks rmly secured to top of ladder, capable of being fastened on Window sill, roof of building, or electric post. Part (6) is life belt attached to heaving line.
My invention has for its object, to aid in lessening loss of life and limb, when fire takes place in large buildings in all large cities; to place in the hands of every one (when cut off by fire) the means of reaching help from the street; to place in the hands of every fireman when cut oif by fire the means of helping himself.
The escape can be carried on a mans body without impeding his progress. Itis so simple that a boy can send it up eighty feet, with ease, by means of a heaving line.
A fireman on reaching a burning building can place the fire escape on the ground and take ball No. 1 in his hand having one hundred feet of light heaving line attached and aim for roof or Window; if he misses he can throw ball No. 2 still having one hundred feet of heaving line at his disposal by hauling the line through connection.
My fire escape would give a fireman greater security on entering a burning building. He can let his ladder down if cut off and haul up as many as is necessary to carry him to the ground. It can be sent to burning buildings from roof of building on opposite side of street.` If one Were kept inside each Window on the top tier or story of high buildings such as factories, hotels or any building Where help is employed, I claim that by connecting two or more of my fire escapes, they could (if cut off from ordinary fire escape) come in safety to ground.
By use of life belt fastened around a childs Waist, any number of children one at a time can be sent down on heaving line one hundred feet in safety same as adult on ladder by simply holding upper end of heaving linein said adults hand.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and original, and desire to secure and protectby Letters Patent, is-
1. My emergency lire escape formed as a Whole of ladder, grapplings, connection attached to said ladder, through slot in Which said connection runs a heaving line With balls, to which line also is attached a life belt, as set forth.
2. The combination of the ladder or rope with the connection, and the heaving line threaded therethrough, as set forth.
Signed at Halifax July 29, 1893.
