SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 511,799, dated January 2, 1894.

Be it known that I, OTTO C. RETSLOFF, residing at innebago city, in the county of Faribault and State of Minnesota, have inyented certain new and useful Improvements 1n Sprinklers; and Ido hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,suoh as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improvementin sprinklers, and more particularly to such as are employed for sprinkling a floor during the operation of sweeping, the device being adapted to be used on or in connection with a broom.

The object of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient means whereby a floor can be sprinkled with water during the operation of sweeping the same.

A further object is to construct the device in such manner that it can be used with any size or style of broom,to provide means for regulating the flow or outlet of water, to provide means for breaking up or dissipating the jets of water and to produce a device which shall be effectual in the performance of its functions.

With these objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a view illustrating my improved sprinkler attached to a broom. Fig. 2 is a face view of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view.

A represents an annular barrel or reservoir having an openinga through its center whereby the device may be placed on the handle B of a broom. The opening a, is preferably made conical, so that the device can be used on handles of various sizes or shapes. Proj ecting downwardly from the barrel or reservoir A is a pipe or duct C preferably having a fiat inner face I? of a width practically equal to the diameter of the barrel or reservoir A, and adapted to rest against the head of the broom. .At the lower end of the pipe or duct C, a horizontal pipe or chamber D communicates and is provided with a series of perfotl1erefrom,said apron or dissipatorbeing made with grooves or corrugations e, so that when the jets of water from the perforations c in the horizontal pipe D shall st-rikeit, they will be broken up or dissipated and the water will leave said apron or dissipator in a thin stream spread out as much as possible. The fine sprays of water from the dissipator or apron E will fall on the floor being swept and thus prevent the rising of dust; or if desired, the apron or dissipator E may be bent further inwardly than is shown in the drawings, so that the water will be thrown against the broom instead of onto the floor.

In the bottom of the pipe or duct (1 a check valve F is located, and adapted to communicate with the said pipe or duct and with the horizontal pipe or chamber D.- A rod f is secured to the stem of the check valve F and projects upwardly through the pipe or duct G and barrel or reservoir A, and out through a suitable opening in the top of the latter, where it is provided with a key or wheel, by means of which to turn it, and thus regulate the flow of the water to the horizontal pipe D and consequently the extent of the sprinkling.

An inlet opening 9 is provided in the upper end of the barrel or reservoir A for the admission of water, and this opening is normally closed by means of a screw cap h.

By the use of the device above described simple and efficient means are provided for sprinkling the door during the act of sweeping the same, thus preventing the rising of dust.

The device is exceedingly simple in construction, cheap to manufacture, easy to apply to the handle of any broom, and is effectual in the performance of its functions.

Various slight changes might be made in the details of construction of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof or limiting its scope. Hence I do not wish to limit myself to the precise details of construction herein set forth; but,

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

cated in the lower end of the duct and in communication with the duct and perforated pipe, and a stem connected with this valve whereby to operate it, substantially as set forth.
