TOBACGO-CUTTER.
SPEOIFIGATION forming part cf Letters Patent N0. 51 1,753, dated January 2, 1894:.
Application filed April '7 1893. Serie] Il'o. 469,412. (N0 model.)
T0 all w7wm 7125 may concern:
Be it known that: I, DAVID B. C0NWAY, a citizen cf the United States, residing at Moorlandin the county cf Webster and State of Iowa, have invented. certain new and useful Improvemencs in Tobacco-Outters; and I do hereby deelare the following to be a full, elear, and exact deseription of the invention, such as Will enable 0T hers skilled in the art L0 which it appertains to make and use the sarne.
My invention 1elates to improvements in tobaceo cutters.
The object of rny invention is t0 provide a simple and inexpensive cntter adapted especially t0 be fastened 130 a wall.
My invention is illustrated in the aecon1- panying drawings, in Wl1lh Figure 1, is a side view, Fig. 2 a plan and Fig. 3, a side view cf a modification.
Referring t0 the drawingsA 1epresents the back plate which is secnred to the wall 01 other object; by any snitable mea ns.
B, is a cornbined ledge and box.
O, O, are parts cf the curved standard counected at one end to the back plate A and at their other ends to the side b, of the conxbined ledge and box B. The parts cf the curved standard are slightly separated frorn each other so as t0 permit the handle E to pas-s between them. Said handle is hung on a rod F, which connects the two Standards. The inner end et the handle is slotted so as to exnbrace the top cf a cutting blade .G, which is hung on plvot lc,passing through the said blade and the slotoed end 0f the handle E.
1 is a vertical slot in the back Wall plate for the purpose 0f affording a gnide for the entting blade as lt ascends and descends by the motion given lt by the handle. The blade also passes for a eertain distance between the parrs of the curved standard.
By the construction abcve described and the way the blade is hung the blade is given not only a vertical downward movement bub also a longitudinally sidewise 01 shearing' movement. The downward cutting n1ove- 1nent is given by the npward movement ofthe handle.
My cutter is operated, when the same is fastened to a wall, by pulling the handle to- Ward you. This causes the blade to descend and cut the tobacco. After the tobaceo is cut and you release the handle, it diops and the weight cf handle will eause the blade 150 con1e in position for cutting the next piece cf tobacco.
In Fig. 3, a modlfication is shown in the means of operating the blade. The inner end of the handle is provided with a pinion p, to engage wit-h a rack s, f0mned on the side of the handle. The cutteris particularly adapted to be used in cutting plug tobaeco.
Having thus described my invention, what I elaim is- A tobaceo cu tter, consisting in combination with a back plate, 0f a bottorn ledge and box, a supporting standard O, made in two parts with a slot between them, a vertically rnoving blade and handle hung between the parts 0f said standard, the blade and a portion 0f the handle oscillating in said S101; and the back plate providecl With a sl0t; 110 guide one side cf the blade, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence cf two witnesses.
DAVID B. OONWAY.
Witnesses:
