Be it known that I, FRANKLIN W. BROOKS,
y a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful mprovements in Seals; and I do hereby declare the following` to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilledin the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain novel improvements in baggage and other seals in which a wire bail is used with one end cast in theseal and the free end adapted to be secured under compression between dies, and particularly to that class of seals in which a sheet metal body is employed and as illustrated in Letters Patent No. 481,388, granted to me on the 23d day of August, 1892.
In the patent above referred to, the seal is composed of a sheet metal cup, with certain threading holes therein for the wire, both en ds of which passing through the said threading holes are locked in place by the compression within the converging walls of the cup of a soft metal plug.
My present invention involves an improvement upon said patented invention, and has for its object to more securely lock the ends of the wire bail and to avoid to a large extent the necessity of threading the wires; and with these ends in view my invention consists in the construction and arrangement hereinafter fully described and specifically claimed.
In order that others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains may know how to make and use the same l will describe the construction and mode of use, referring by letters of reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is afrontview of one of myimproved seals with baling wire, in position and before compression of the soft metal plug. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a similar section after compression of the soft metal plug. Fig. 1i is a front view, and Fig. 5 a rear view after compression. Figs. 6, 7 and 8, representi central sections, show` ing modifications in the form of the soft metal plug; and Fig. 9 is a plan View showing the manner of connecting the wire and plug with the sheet metal cup.

A represents a metal cup made of tin or other comparatively stiff sheet metal, and of substantially the general construction shown in my patent above referred to, except that in the present case but a single threading hole is provided at one point in the wall of the cup as clearly shown at Figs. 1 and 9.
B is a plug made of lead or other suitable material capable of compression and in any one of the forms shown in the several figures of the drawings so far as the body portion proper of the plug is concerned.
The plug B is cast around one end of .the bail wire C and is formed of a diameter Just sufficient to be readily forced within the wall of the cup, which is done by iirst passing the free end of the wire through the threading hole of the cup as shown at Fig. 9, and then with the thumb and fingers pressing the plug into the cup so that it will occupy the position shown in Figs. 2, 6, 7 and 8. This plug B is formed with a stem b and a cap c of greater diameter than the said stein b, as clearly shown.
When the bail wire O has been secured to the car or other thing to be protected, the free or loose end is then turned or wrapped around the stern b under the cap c, and the seal is then subjected to the action of dies in an ordinary seal press, which action crushes down the stein b and cap c, and forcing thebody of the plug outwardly and against the circular converging wall of the sheet metal cupA, causes the secured free end i of the wire, now pinched between the body and cap of the soft metal plug, to be located below the plane of the wall of the cup, and thoroughly concealed and protected by the metal forming the cap c.
A construction of soft metal plug such as is shown best at Fig. 2 fulfills all the conditions of arrangement and results just dem scribed, but in order that a minimum of 'strength or power only shall be exerted to compress the soft metal plug I prefer to make IOO the latter in any one of the forms shown-at Figs; 6, 7 and 8, which forms constitute the subject matter of another application for Letters Patent filed simultaneously with this.
The sheet metal cup A forming a part of my present invention is, in the course 0f manufacture, formed with any representative characters of designation for ownership, such as shown at Fig. 5, and any subsequent marks which indicate the station or time at which the seal is applied is impressed in or upon the metal plug by the sealing' press, as clearly .shown at Fig. 4.
I do not Wish it to be understood that I lay claim herein either to the sheet metal cup referred to in my patent of August 23, 1892, or to the peculiar shape and construction ot' the soft metal plug which forms the subject of my concurrent application; but
WhatI do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination with the sheet metal cup A, provided with a threading hole in the Wall or body thereof, of a soft metal plug B proif vided with a stein b, and surrno'unting cap c,
and having one end of a bail Wire C cast therein, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
