SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 511,577, dated December 26, 1893.
Application filed January 31,1893- Serial No. 460.274- (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANCIS E. BENNETT, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Garment-Fasteners, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of an eye for a garment fastener, the same being formed of a loop with attaching eyes and a guard, substantially as described whereby the hook is firmly held engaged with said eye, and is prevented from improper disengagement.
-It further consists of the combination of parts hereinafter set forth.
Figure 1 represents a plan view of an eye embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a plan view of a hook embodying my invention. Fig. 3 represents a view of the hook and eye connected. Fig. 4 represents a side elevation thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings:-A designates a hook, and B designates an eye. The eye consists of a loop 0, the ends D of which are flaring, there being a neck E at the entrance to the loop. Oh the endsD are eyes F, whereby the device may be secured in position.
Gdesignates an elastic guard which is con-' tinuous of one of the eyes F, and extends forwardly between the walls of the neck 'E, and below the same, so that the end of the guard which is behind the loop C covers the width of the space between the walls of said neck. The latter is also preferably curved or raised in the central part thereof, and depressed at its ends, see Fig. 4.
The hook Aconsists of the head H, the cross shanks J, and attaching eyes K on the ends of said shanks. The head is bent or turned downward so as more rigidly to engage the loop 0.
It will be seen that when the shanks J which fora short distance from the loop coincide and then diverge toward the attaching eyes are presented to the neck E, and the hook A drawn, in the present case to the right, said shank passes through the neck E, rides over the guard G, and reaches the bend of the loop 0, against which it is seated, thus connecting the hook with the eye, it being seen that the guard G springs back to its normal position, thus preventing improper return of the head and disconnection'of the hook and eye. When however, the hook is properly manipulated, the head rides backward over the guard G, the latter yielding, and the shank passes through the neck E, whereby the hook is removed from the eye. The inner end of the guard is bent or rounded, forming a loop as at L, for presenting a smooth surface, and preventing the exposure of a sharp edge, it being noticed that the parts of the eye are formed of a continuous piece of wire, the hook being also preferably formed of said material. By having the crossing shanks coincidev for a portion of their length, the hook is more readily introduced in the neck E.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a garment fastener, an eye formed of a loop with flaring ends forming a neck with walls raised at their central portion, and depressed at their ends, and a guard extending from an attaching eye on said loop, said guard having a looped end covering the width between the walls of the neck, said parts being combined substantially as described.
2. A garment fastener consisting of an eyemember' having a guard formed ofa projecting end of one of the attaching eyes, covering the width between the walls of the throat thereof, and a hook-member having crossed shanks and a turned down head, said parts being combined substantially as described.
