GARMENT-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 488,178, dated December 20, 1892. Application filed December 24,1891. Serial No. 416,040. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANCIS E. BENNETT, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented. a new and useful Improvement in Garment-Fasteners, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of a garment fasten er having a member formed of a shank, attaching eyes at the rear end thereof, and a coil on each side of the forward end of said shank, said parts being composed of a continuous piece of wire, and serving to control the headed opposite memberin areliable and resilient manner.
Figure 1 represents a plan View of a. garment fastener embodying my invention, the members thereof being separated. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of the garment fastener shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a plan View thereof, the members being connected.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Referring to the drawingsz-A and B designate the members of a garment fastener embodying my invention.
The member A consists of the two-part shank G, the eyes D at the rear end thereof for attachment to a garment, &c., the necks E intermediate of the eyes, whereby the rear of the space between the shank is normally closed, and the coils F, F, at the front end of the shank, said coils being on the outside of the shank and joined by the cross bar G, which is against or in close contact with the shank C it being noticed that said parts 0, D, E, F and G, are formed of a contiuous piece of wire.
The member B consists of the shank H, the cross-head J, and attaching eyes K, said head and eyes being at opposite ends of said shank, which latter is bent at M Fig. 2.
The portions of the wire forming the shank O are curved or spread outward, so as to form a wider shank at its central portion than at the entrance of the throat L or at the place of the cross bar G, so that the cross head J of the member B can be guided on said shank.
The operation is as follows:The shank H is presented to the place L, between the necks E, and pressed thereinto, whereby said necks separate and permit the shank to enter the space between the shank O, and the cross head J passes behind said shank, and rides on the same until it reaches the cross bar G, whereby it is controlled and prevented from further outward motion, by reason .of the close contact of the said cross bar with. the shank and the bend M in the shank H, whereby the line of draw or pull of the head J is directly in line with and against the said cross bar G, it being noticed that the cross head is wider than the transverse space of the shank at said cross bar G, and thus the members are reliably connected, and the garment accordingly fastened. Meanwhile the necks E close, thus preventing improper disconnection of the cross head from the member A, it being noticed that the two coils F increase the resiliency of the shank O, and
the head J bears against the same by contact with the cross bar G,so that the thrust of the head against the front end of the member A, is eased, owing to the elastic nature of said end, due to the coils F, F.
When it is desired to unfasten the garment, the shank H is pressed against the closed necks E, whereby the latter separate and permit the passage of said shank therethrough, the head J thus being entirely disengaged from the shank O, and the members disconnected.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A garment fastener formed of wire having a member constructed of an elastic shank with a widened portion and with attaching eyes, and coils at the front end, said coils being outside of the shank, substantially as described.

A garment fastener formed of wire having a member constructed with an elastic shank, having coils at the front end outside of the same, and a cross bar connecting said coils, said shank having a widened central than the transverse space of the shank of the portion substantially as described. eye member at the cross bar thereof, sub- 10 3.
