BABY-CARRIAG E BASKET.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 511,537, dated December 26, 1893. Application filed March 21, 1893. Renewed November 27, 1893. Serial No. 492,153. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, GEORGE MAR UA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Baby-Carriage Baskets; andI do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to a novel construction in baskets of baby carriages, and relates more particularly to that class of baby carriages which have the swinging or movable back hinged to the bottom so that the inclination of said back can be changed from an upright to a reclining position.

The object of this invention is to provide a basket for a carriage of this kind, of novel,

. durable and efficient construction.

The invention consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafpermit the back piece 0 to swing about its lower edge as a pivot. Near the upper edges of the sides B are rearwardly projecting arms 2 that extend rearwardly and downwardly, as shown in the drawings, and are connected at their outer ends by a cross piece 3. It will be noted that the back piece 0 swings within the arms 2 and that the cross piece 3 serves as a stop to limit the rearward movement of the back piece 0, and further, that said cross piece serves to stiffen the sides B of the basket which otherwise have no other connection at their upper ends at the rear portion of the basket.

To the rear face of the back piece 0 and about at its center, is secured a spring bar 4: that extends on both sides of its connection with the back piece outwardly and beyond the arms 2, said spring bar being confined by guides 5 near the outer edge of the back piece. Upon the arms 2 are located shoulders 6 which have abrupt forward faces and inclined rear faces, said shoulders 6 being so located that when the back piece 0 is in an upright position the spring bar 4 can rest against the forward faces of said shoulders. The said shoulders thus serve to hold the back piece 0 in its upright position, and it will be noted that by lifting the ends of the spring bar 4 said bar will be released from the shoulders 6 so as to permit the back piece 0 to rest on its hinges, as shown in dotted lines, so that it will come into engagement with the cross bar 3 which will hold it in its reclining position.

At the rear edge of the sides B and below the arms 2 are arranged brackets 7 that serve as a support for said arms 2 and serve also as a wall or plate to close the opening made when the back piece 0 is moved to its re U1- ing position, so as to prevent the baby 'bm putting its hands through the opening made between the sides of the back piece 0 and the rear ends of the sides 13, which would otherwise exist in the absence of said bracket or plate 7. The said bracket or plate is made of scroll work to add to the ornamental effect of the basket, as shown in said Fig. 1.

I claim as my invention- 1. A carriage basket having a swinging back piece 0 located between rearwardly extending arms 2 upon the sides of the basket, and a cross piece'3 connecting the rear ends of said arms 2, substantiallyas described.

2. A carriage basket comprising the sides 0 B having rearwardly extending arms 2 connected at their rear ends by the cross piece 3, shoulders 6 near the inner ends of said arms 2, and a swinging back piece 0 located between the said arms 2 and provided with a lower edges of the arms 2, substantially as spring bar 4 to engage said shoulders 6, subdescribed. stantially as described.
