SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 511,484, dated December 26, 1893. Application filed January 26, 1891. Serial No. 379,130- (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY E. WOLCOTT, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Garbage and Ash Cans, of which the following is a specification.

My invention consists in certain new and useful improvements in garbage and ash cans, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

My garbage-can has a cylindrical body, 1,

provided with longitudinal strengthening ribs, 1, and a close-fitting cover, 2, provided wlth a rubber gasket, a for preventing escape of foul air or offensive odors. The body, 1, is set in and pivoted to a east-iron,or steel, base, 14, whose flared bottom, 3, is raised, in pract1ce, about five inches, for two purposes: first, to provide an air space beneath the can proper, which will protect the floor, on which the can sits, from an undue degree of heat from the can in case h t ashes or like coals are deposited in it, and, secondly, the raised bottom provides space for two

9, 9, which are secured by anysuitable means, and arranged horizontally side by side, and project laterally through a slot inthe base flange, to serve as bearings for a transporting wheel, or roller, 4. The wheel journals have their bear- 1 ngs in oblong slots, 15, formed in such proectmg ends of the bars, 9, whereby the wheel has a certain freedom of movement radially to the can. A circular spring, 16, is secured to the base of the can by a clip, 17, and its free, upturned ends bear against the wheel ournals, as shown, so that the latter are held normally at the outer ends .of the slots, 15. By this means, I provide an'elastie, or spring, bearing which prevents severe jars or jolts when the wheel, 4, passes over a rough surface, or small obstructions, so that the loaded can may run smoothly and easily.

The can proper is held inclined, at the angle requisite to enable it to run on the wheel,,4, by means of handles, 5. These are arranged vertically, one on each side of the can body, 1, and consistof stout iron rods, having wooden han d-holds, 5, applied to their upper ends. The handles are held by keepers, 5", and provided at their lower ends with eyes which fit on screw-bolts, 6, that project laterallyfrom the can body, 1, and are detachably secured thereon by means of nuts, 6'. By screwing off the nuts, 6', the eyes of the handles may be slipped 01f the latter, and then, the wood hand-holds having been also detached, the handles maybe drawn down out of the keepers. Thus the handles may be readily detached when desired, for any re'ason, as, for example, when the can is to be shipped to any destination. I

The can is provided at the top with a catch 8, which catches over the edge of a garbage receiver when the can is'raised.

When it is desired to move the can. over a fioor, or other surface, the handles, 5, are grasped, and the can thereby tilted forward until it rests solely on the wheel, 4, when it is rolled forward thereon. In case it be desired to run the can over a surface covered with ice or snow, the wheel 4, is locked, so that it may slide instead of rolling; and, for this purpose, I employ a pin 10, which is .insorted (see Figs. 1 and 5) through coincident holes, 9 in the bars 9, and a hole, 4, in wheel, 4.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination, with the garbage-can proper, having abase which supports it out of contact with the floor, of the wheel attachment consisting of bars arranged horizontally beneath the can body and projecting through.

the base flange, and a wheel journaled in the outer ends of said bars, in near proximity to the base, as shown and described for the purpose specified.

2. The combination, with the garbage-can proper, having the flanged base'whieh normally supports it out of contact with the floor, or other surface, of bars arranged beneath said can and projecting through the base flange, a wheel journaled in slots in the outer ends of said bars, and a spring, 16, which bears against the wheel journals and thus 4. The combination, with the garbage-can body having lateral screw bolts and keepers 5 of the detachable handles arranged v ertically in said keepers and having eyes which receive said screw-bolts, the nuts 6, applied to the latter, and detachable hand-holds, 5, applied to the upper ends of said rods, as 20 shown and described for the purpose specified.
