No. 511,481, f Panama-Dec. 26, 1a-93.3
UNITED STATES PATENTl OFFICE..
FRANK E. WILLIAMS, OF ALHAMBRA, CALIFORNIA.
Bui-TONER.
SPECIFICATION .forming part of Letters Patent No. 51 1,481, dated December 26, `1893.
Application iileli April 14,1893.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK E. WILLIAMS, a citizen4 of the United States, residing at Alhambra, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttoners; and I do declare the following to bel a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specilication.
This invention relates to buttoners, and has for its object to dispense with a hook or analogous formation and to provide a device of the class set forth of such form that it will virtually become continuous with the fastening with which it is used to cause the parts of the sameto properly connect with each other.
With these and other objects in View, the invention consists of the construction and arrangement of the parts as willbe more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings: Figure l, is a perspective View of the improved device showing its application and operation. Fig. la, is` a sectional view of the buttoner applied to a fastener. Fig. 2, is a perspective view of the buttoner detached and on a larger scale. Fig. 3, is a similar view of the buttoner shown slightly modified. Fig. 4, is a sectional plan view of a further modification, shown applied. Fig. 5, is a vertical sectional view of a buttoner shown by Fig. 4, also applied.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several gures.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral l designates the handle which is either of integral bent wire form, or an applied piece, all of which is fullyr shown, and having a shank end 2 which is hookless and slightly modified in the several figures of the drawings. In
Figs. 1, 1ab and 2, the upper part of the end of the shank 2 is formed with a cut-away portion 3 and an abutting shoulder 4. In Fig. 3 the shank 2 is formed with the cutaway portion 3, a shoulder 4, and forwardly projecting lip 5. In Fig. 4, the shank 2 is Serial No. 470,332. (No model.)
formed with the cut-away portionand at the point where the shoulder is provided in the other forms of the device, an entrant cut away portion 7 is constructed of suitable form to engage aprojection. In all of the, forms shown, the under side of the shank is gradually tapered and preferably rounded as at 8, to provide for an easy and smooth engagement with the fastening to be operated upon. It will also be observed thata single hookless shank is employed in each instance and in operation, as shown in Fig. l, the said shank in either of its forms is caused to engage the rear part of the male member of a male and female fastening toraise said male member and force it into the female member by the aid of the thumb or finger pressing on the headof the said female member. When the said shank is applied to the male member they virtually become continuous of each other, and by pushing or shoving on the handle of the device, a power is applied to the male member of the fastening sufficient to cause an articulation with the female. member, and a desirable connection quickly results.
Changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction might be further made in'addition to those shown without inl the least departing from the nature ory spirit of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is Y 1. A buttoner consisting of a handle and a shank having a cut-away portion on the upper side thereof at its free end provided with a plane surface and forming a shoulder, substantially as described.
'2. A buttoner consisting of a handle and a shank having a cut-away portion on the upper side thereof at its free end provided with a plane surface and forming a shoulder, and also provided with a recess forming a lip for engaging the fastener, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aftix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK E. WILLIAMS.
