SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 51 1,117. dated December 19, 1 893 I Applicationiiled August 15,1898. Serial No.483.l62. (No model.)
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL 0. BROWN, of Niagara, in the county of Marion and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gar-Couplings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
This invention is an improved car coupling especially designed for freight cars; and it consists in novel devices for securing or releasing the link in the draw head; and for adjusting the link so as to cause it to enter an opposite draw-bar; and for operating the said devices from the side or top of car; all of which will be clearly understood from the following description in connection with the drawings, in Which- Figure 1' is a perspective view of the parts of my invention applied to the end of a car. Fig. 2 is a perspective sectional view of the coupling, indicating the link coupled. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the'link in position to be locked or released.
In said drawings A represents a draw-bar in the throat of which about center thereof and near its front end, is secured a beveled catch block B which has a screw threaded 'shank 1) depending through aslot in the floor of the draw bar and secured by a nut b as shown. The block may be seated in a recess in the floor of draw bar and abuts against a lug a on the floor, which is beveled on its front face as shown, so that a link striking on said lug will ride up thereon onto and over block B, dropping over the latter in the position indicated in Fig. 2.
G designates a vertically movable link-adjusting bar playing in guide slots in the top and bottom of the draw bar in rear of block B, and having a forwardly projecting arm 0 opposite block 13 adapted to underlie the end of the link as indicated in the drawings, and above arm 0 it is provided with two parallel arms 0' adapted to overlie the end of the link as indicated in Figs. 2 and 3. lVhen the bar 0 is down the arms 0' will prevent the link being raised or disengaged from block B, unless bar 0 is also raised; and when bar O is raised arm 0 will lift the inner end of the link until it is freed from the block as indicated in Fig. 3 of the drawings. I provide the bar 0 with the arms 0, c 0' so that the link can be adjusted to facilitate its engagement with another draw-bar in coupling the three arms preventing lateral rocking of the links, but do not confine myself to a construction having three arms.
As a further safeguard to prevent uncoupling of the link, I employ a tumbler D which is pivoted on a pin D above blockB as shown. The front face of tumbler D is beveled inwardly and downwardly to its point of contact with block B, and its rear face is vertical and in line with the rear face of block B, so that should the link rise over the block it will be held by the tumbler as will be apparent from Fig. .2 of the drawings. The meeting faces of the tumbler and block are also beveled upwardly and outwardly as at Z1 so that outward swing of the tumbler is prevented though it is free to swing inward and the tumbler is rounded as at D around the opening for pivot pin D, this portion fitting into a correspondingly rounded recess A of the draw-bar, so that draft strain on the tumbler will be transferred direct to the drawbar and it will be impossible to pull the block or tumbler out without breaking away the walls of the draw bar. Outward swing of the tumbler is further prevented by a squared shoulder D between the upper end of the front face and portion D thereof which abuts against a shoulder A on the draw bar when the tumbler is down. The tumbler is provided with a rearwardly extending arm (1 lying above arms a of bar 0, and pivotally connected to the upper ends of bars E, E, which are arranged at each side of bar 0 and are vertically movable independently thereof. The lower ends of bars E are connected below the draw bar by a cross plate e. By pushing plate a upward bars E, E, are lifted, and thereby turn the tumbler on its pivot-and out of engagement with block B as indicated in. Fig. 3, and when the bars E, E, are partly lifted, plate estrikes the bot-.

This shaft is provided with a crank arm 9, underlying and adapted to contact and raise plate e when the shaft is properly turned as can be done by a handle G on either end, which handle can be locked by means of a spring catch h so as to hold plate 6 raised, and the coupler in uncoupled position as indicated in Fig. 3. The shaft may be also rotated from the top of the car by means of a pull rod or chain I, the lower end of which is connected to a crank arm on the shaft G as shown in My improved coupling permits the desired amount of slack between two coupled drawheads necessary in starting heavy trains; it cannot become casually uncoupled; and the coupling or uncoupling, and adjusting of the link, can be effected from either side or top of car.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent thereon, is-
1. The combination of the draw-bar having a link holding block or lug in its throat, with a vertically movable bar in said draw-bar and depending therethrougn behind said block provided with the upper and lower forwardly projecting arms adapted to embrace the end of an incoming link and hold the link upon the block when the bar isdown or raise it to disengage the block when the bar is raised, and means for lifting said bar at its lower end, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the draw bar the link locking tumbler pivoted in the throat thereof, and the vertically movable bars pivotally connected to said tumbler and depending below the bar, and means for raising said bars so as to swing the tumbler, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the draw bar having a link holding block or lug in its throat, with a vertically movable bar in said draw bar behind said block provided with upper and lower forwardly projecting arms adapted to embrace the end of an incoming link, and hold the link upon the block when the bar is down, or raise it to disengage the block when the bar is raised, and a locking tumbler pivoted in the draw bar above said block and coacting therewith, substantially as and for the purpose described.

The combination of the draw-barh'aving a link holding block or lug in its throat, with a vertically movable bar in said draw bar behind said block provided with upper and lower forwardly projecting arms adapted to embrace the end of anincoming link, and hold the link upon the block when the bar is down, or raise it to disengage the block when the bar is raised, and a locking tumbler pivoted in the drawbar above said block and coacting therewith, and means for swinging said tumbler out of the way prior to the lifting of the link by said bars, substantially as described.
5. The combination of the draw bar, the link retaining block therein, the link adjusting bar, the tumbler pivoted in the draw bar above said block, the vertically movable bars for operating said tumbler, and means substantially as described, whereby the latter bars are caused to raise the link adjusting bar after they have moved the tumbler out of the way of the link, substantially as described.
6. The combinationof the draw bar having a link locking lug or block as B, a pivoted link locking tumbler as D, and means for moving said tumbler out of the way and simultaneously lifting the link above the lug, substantially as described.
7. The combination of the draw-bar A, the lug or block B therein, the bar 0 having arms c, c, the tumbler D and the bars E, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose specified.
8. The combination of the draw bar, the tumbler D, the vertically movable bars E connected to said tumbler, and the rock shaft and its crank arm for raising said bars, and means for rocking said shaft, substantially as described.
9. The combination of the draw bar, the link retaining block therein, the link adjusting bar, the tumbler pivoted in the draw bar above said block, the vertically movable bars for operating said tumbler, and means substantially as described whereby the latter bars are caused to raise the link adjusting bar after they have moved the tumbler out of the way of the link, and the rock shaft, its crank arms, and means for rocking said shaft so as to raise said vertically movable bars, all constructed and arranged substantially, as described.
