Be it known that I, WALTER Scorr, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Plainfield, in the county ofUnion and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to 'printing machines, and consists of combinations of devices hereinai'ter described and more particularly pointed out in the claims concluding this specilication. v
The objects of my invention are to` print sheets in one or more colors on one side, and in a plurality of colors on the other side; also to collect sheets and deliver them, and other objects as will hereinafter appear.
The preferred form `of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings forining part of this specilication, in which- Figure 1 isa diagrammatic side elevation of Figs. 2, 3 and 4 show the Figs. 5, 6, '7, 8, 9 and 10 are diagrams showing the operation of the sheet collecting cylinder and its grippers in collecting four sheets.
The printing mechanism employed by me consists of three or more printing couples arranged with the impression cylinders in a row, the type cylinders being placed alternately on opposite sides of said row. Each type cylinder is inked by any suitable or usual inking apparatus; such inking apparatus will not be further described as it may be of any usual form. The type or plate cylinders oneach side of the row impress different colors upon their sides of the sheets as they pass through the machine. The impression cylinders are fitted with any suitable sheet retainers, as pins or grippers. vThe sheets may be fed in any desired way to'one of the end impression cylinders, as from a feed table or from a roll and cutting cylinders.
In the drawings is shown a roll R from which awcb l? is led between cutting cylinders 13, la, the male cylinder 13 having the I knife 15 and the female cutting cylinder the groove 16. These cutting cylinders do not act to feed the web, being separated by a space; the feed is done by feed rolls l1, 12; a roll 10 may be used it' desired to guide thepaper to the feed rolls. The cutting cylinders maybe constructed and driven as in my Patent No. LLLMJS'Y, granted January 6, 1891, it being understood that at the moment of cutting the paper the speed of the cutting devices is the same as that of the Web. The sheets cnt from the web by the cylinders 13, 14, are taken by the accelerating tapes 20, 2l and carried to the first impression cylinder 25. The tapes 2O run on rolls 19, 23, and tapes 2l run on rollers 1S, 22. The space between the cutting cylinders and the tapes may be bridged over by any suitable means, as by guides 17, to support the end of the web from the cylinders to the tapes. Guides 24 dedect the leading ends of the sheets downward around the roller 23; the grippers 27 of the first impression cylinder 25 close and take the leading end of the sheet from the tapes and the guides 24, and carry the sheets downward between said impression cylinder 25 and the plate cylinder 26 from which the sheet takes the first color on the outside As the grippers 27 pass the second impression cylinder 28 said grippers open to release the sheets and at the same time the grippers 30 of said second impression cylinder 28 close to take the sheet from cylinder 25. The sheet is then carried between the impression cylinder 28 and plate cylinder 29, receiving the rst color on the other side of the sheet; as grippers 30 pass the impression cylinder 3l, they open to release the sheet., and grippers 33 of cylinder 3l close fvand take' the sheet, which is then carried between the impression cylinder 3l and plate cylinder 32, receiving a second color upon the side first printed upon.
Other printing couples may be employed to print additional colors on one or both'sides of the sheets, but I have not deemed it necessary to show them, as it is obvious how they should be placed. 4
It will be observed that in the drawings the axes of the impression cylinders are in or nearly in horizontal plane, and that the end plate cylinders are placed relatively to their Acorresponding impression cylinders so that the planes joining the axes of said end plate and impression cylinders form acute angles with the plane of the axes of the impression cylinders. l prefer that this angle should be about forty-five degrees. lt will also be observed that the ink distributing cylinders D,

It will be observed further thatthey intermediate plate cylinder or cylinders are placed above or below their respective cylin- 1c ders and that the ink distributing cylinders thereof, as D2, are placed above and to one side (or below and to one side) of the corre-V sponding plate cylinder, thus giving a clear space atene side of the latter for the above named purposes. The impression, plate and other cylinders and parts are geared together in usual ways.
The last impression cylinder, as 3l, delivers the sheets in any desired way. I prefer, howzo ever, to collect the sheets and deliver them.
For this purpose, I employ a collecting cylinder, as 34, having two sets of grippers adapted to co-act with the same longitudinal part of the cylinder to grip sheets, said'sets of grip- 2 5 pers alternating in taking sheets as they pass the source of sheet supply. The sets of grippers may be upon shafts that lie parallel to the axis of the collecting cylinder; orthe grippers of each set may be independently movable about axes radial of the cylinder, those of each set being moved simultaneously by suitable mechanism to close them to take, to move to release, and to move from under, sheets. l prefer to have the sets of grippers 3 5 on shafts parallel to the axis of the cylinder, and that said shafts shall have motion toward and from that longitudinal part of the cylinder with which the gri ppers co-act to retain sheets. I prefer to obtain this alternating 4o motion of the gripper-shafts by means of independent sets of rocking arms, each grippershaft being journaled in its own set of said arms. This collecting cylinder 34 is placed above and to one side of the last impression cylinder, its grippers taking the sheets from said impression cylinder. The grippers of the impression cylinder 3l open before they reach the line of tangency of the two said cylinders, a suitably placed pressure roll b co-act- 5o ing with cylinder 3l to feed the sheets forward to the grippers of the collecting cylinder 34. Guides c may be used with or in lieu of roller b; or both guides c and roll b may be omitted, and cylinder 31 be fitted with pins to hold 5 5 the sheets thereto, with or Without the use of the gripper-s; or throw-offs, as S0, maybe used in lieu of the roller or guides, said throw-offs pushing the sheets against the receiving cylinder 34 as they approach the same. When 6o the desired number of sheets have been collected by the cylinder 34, the said sheets are run upon fliers, as 35, which lay them on a delivery table, as 36; or other delivery means may be used if desired.
Referring now to Figs. 2, 3 and 4, the cylinder 34 is carried by a shaft 37, journaled in the framework F, and having a gear X at one end, said gear having the same pitch as the cylinder 34, and meshing with. a gear on the shaft of the cylinder 31. A rock shaft 38V is journaled in the cylinder 34 and has arms 39 extending toward the periphery of the cylinder, but not thereto. I prefer that these arms shall extend secant-wise ofthe cylinder,
though they may extend radially. The shaft 40 journaled in these arms 39 has a set 0f grippersV G2y thereon, said shaft having the usual crank 41 and roller at one end for coaction with a cam, as 42, to open the grippers. A spring (not shownlkeeps the grippers closed except at such times as they are open, as hereinafter described. The shaft 38 has a crank 43 and roller at one end, the said roller resting in the grooved cam C2. This cam is loosely sleeved upon the shaft 37 of the cylinder 34, and is'rigidly connected with the gear 44, also loosely sleeved upon the said shaft; the cam and the gear may be integral with each other. The gear 44 is driven by the intermediate gears 45, 46, journaled upon studs in the framework. A gear 47, one half the size of gear `46 and meshing therewith, is secured upon the shaft 48 of cylinder 3l.
From the described construction it results that the cam G2 makes one turn to two turns of the cylinder 34. The cam C2 is preferably so shaped that the gripper shaft 40 will be held outward toward the periphery of the drum cylinder 34 rather more than half the time; and inward a short time for the purpose of withdrawing the grippers G2 from contact with the drumsurface of the cylinder 34, or from under sheets, so that they can be operated to take a sheet from the sheet supply means as hereinafter described. The shaft 40 passes through an elongated arcshaped slot d in the end of the drum cylinder, said arc having the axis 38 as a center. A second rock shaft 49 is journaled in the cylinder 34 near the shaft 3S and has arms 50 extending to near the periphery of the cylinder, the said arms preferably extending secantwise thereof. The said arms 39 are shown curved to pass around the shaft 49; this is due to the relative location of shafts 38 and 49. In said arms 50 is journaled the shaft 5l having a set of grippers G adapted to co-act with the same longitudinal part of the cylinder 34 as the grippers G2, mentioned above; the gripper shaft 5l has the usual crank 52 and roller for co-action with a cam, as 59, to open said grippers. A spring (not shown) keeps the grippers G closed except at the times hereinafter mentioned; The shaft 5l passes through an arc-shaped slot f in the ends of the cylinder 34, the said arc having the axis 49 as a center'. The shaft 49 has a crank 53 and roller for engaging the camC, said cam being loosely sleeved upon the shaft 37 and being rigidly connected with the gear 54, likewise sleeved upon said shaft The gear 54 is driven bythe gears 55, 56, on studs in the framework; gear 56 is driven by the gear 57 on the shaft 48 of the cylinder 3l.

The said gear 57 is one-half the size of gear 56, from which it results that the cam C makes one turn to two Aturns of the cylinder 34. Gam C may be shaped like cam C2. Said cams C and C2 are oppositely set; that is, similar parts of these cams are about on opposite sides of the shaft 37. From the described construction for operating the shafts 38, 49, it results that the grippers G are withdrawn from the said longitudinal part of the cylinder 34 during one revolution of the cylinder 34 and the grippers G2 are withdrawn from said part during the next revolution thereof, all as hereinafter described.
The cam 59 for operating the grippers G is' pivoted, as at 60, to the framework, and is operated by the rod 76, pivotally connected thereto, the said rod having a strap 77 surrounding the eccentric or cam 78, which is rigidly connected with the gear 56 above named. Since gear 56 makes one turn to two turns of the cylinder 31(01' cylinder 34) it follows that the cam 59 is moved toward the `axis 37 of cylinder 34 during one revolution thereof, and away from said axis during the next revolution, thus operating the grippers G' to take sheets during alternate revolutions `of the cylinder 34. The cam 42 for operating the grippers G2 is pivoted to the framework, as at 6l, and is moved by the rod 64 pivotally connected thereto, said rod having a strap 65 surrounding the eccentric or cam 63, which is rigidly connected with the gear 46 above named. Gear 46 being twice the size of its driver 47, makes one revolution to two revolutions of the cylinder 3l (or cylinder 34), whence it results that cam 63 moves the cam 42 inward or toward the shaft 37 during one revolution of cylinder 34 and outward during the next revolution, thus operating the grippers G2 during alternate revolutions of the cylinder 34. The cams 63, 7 8 are oppositely placed, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, whence it results that the grippers G', G2 alternate in opening and taking sheets as they pass the cylinder 31. When any desired number of sheets have been collected, the grippers holding them to cylinder 34 may be opened in any desired way, and the sheets be run on fliers, as 35, or be otherwise delivered. A cam 66, carried by an arm 67 of shaft 63, journaled in the framework, is moved toward and from the shaft by means of the arm 69 on shaft 68, a rod 70 and the eccentric or cani 72. Rod 70 is pivotally connected to arm 69, and has a strap surrounding the cam 72. Said cam 72 is rigidly connected to gear 74, which meshes with a gear rigidly fixed to gear 46. The gear 75 is one-half the size of gear 46, and gear 74 is twice the size of gear 75. From the described sizes of gears 47, 46, 75, 74, it
results that the cam 72 makes one turn to four turns of the cylinder 3l (or cylinder 34), thus moving the cam 66 outward to its operative position during the fourth revolution of the cylinder 34, and opening the grippers G2. rlhe fliers 35 are to be so moved that they will enter grooves in the cylinder 34v j ust previous to the time the grippers G2 are opened by the cam 66, and move away therefrom when the sheets have been run upon them. The fliers 35 lay the collected sheets upon the board 36 and return in time to take the next four sheets in the same manner from the cylinder 34.
The operation of the sheet collecting device is shown diagrammatically in Figs. 5, 6, 7, S, 9 and l0. It will be understood that one or the other of said sets of grippers G', 'G2 always bears against the sheet-supporting part of cylinder 34, or the sheets thereon, as the said grippers pass the impression cylinder 31, and that the other set of said grippers is operated to take sheets at that time. Fig. 5 shows the position of the parts at the moment the grippers G close to take the first sheet. Shortly thereafter, or as the grippers approach or are about at the top of cylinder 34 in Fig. 2 or 3, the cam C2 moves the arm 43 of shaft 38 toward the shaft 37, pulling the grippers G2 from under the sheet just taken by the grippers G (the position of the grippers G2 after such withdrawal being that shown in Fig. 9). A suitably placed stop on the end of cylinder 34 co-acting with an arm of shaft 40 prevents said grippers G2 from moving too far inward. As the collecting cylinder 34 turns and the sets ot grippers again approach the source of sheetsupply, the cam Q2 moves the arm 43 outward and the grippers G2 back toward the said longitudinal part of the cylinder 34; cam .42 is moved outward and opens said grippers G2, which close as they pass the source of sheet supply (as shown in Fig. 2) to take a second sheetin the manner illustrated in Fig. 6, the grippers G still holding the first sheet. Next, the grippers G are withdrawn from under the second sheet (as in Fig. 7) by the cam C', which returns the gripper shaft 5l to the position shown in Fig. 3 before the grippers again pass the source of sheet supply. A suitably placed stop on the end of cylinder 34 co-acting with an arm of shaft 5l prevents said grippers G from moving too far inward when these grippers are with! drawn from contact with the sheet-supporting surface of cylinder 34. The cam 59, being moved outward, opens said grippers G; they close to take a third sheet in the manner illustrated in Fig. 8. The grippers G2 are withdrawn in the manner above described to the position shown in Fig. 9,and are returned to position and operated to take a fourth sheet as illustrated in Fig. l0, after which the grippers G arev withdrawn as in Fig. 7. ,pers G2, and the sheets are run upon the fliers which deliver them to the table as described.
It will be understood that the grippersof the impression cylinders are operated in any usual way at the times described. The cams 42, -58 and 66 may be operated at the proper times by any suitable means and from any desired part of the machine. The mechanism operating cam 66 may be so proportioned that more or less than four sheets may be collected before the delivery takes place. In case an odd number of sheets be collected, a cam to open grippers G to deliver them must be used. That is, the sets open alternately to deliver packs of sheets. I have shown the cams 42, 59 at opposite ends of the cylinder 34, but they may be placed at the same end if desired. By leaving the plates or forms od the cylinder 29, the impression cylinder '28 becomes a transfer cylinder only between curved to pass around the rock shaft 49, ow-
ing to the close proximity of these shafts to each other. The arms are sufficiently cn rved to allow them to be clear of shaft 49 in all positions of the arms duc to a proper working of the parts.
It is obvious that when an cdd number of sheets are collected on the cylinder 34, the sets of grippers need not be withdrawn in the manner described until after the delivery,
both sets being opened at that time; also, one set may be opened, and the other withdrawn, at the moment of such delivery.
What I claim is- 1. The combination of three or more impression cylinders arranged in a row, sheet retainers on each impression cylinder, a form cylinder for each impression cylinder, the form cylinders being located alternately on opposite sides of said row, and means supplying sheets to the first of the impression cylinders, whereby sheets may be printed in one or more colors on one side and in a plurality of colors on the other side, substantially as described.
2. The combination of three or more im` 'pression cylinders arranged in a row, sheet retainers on each of said cylinders, a form cylinder for each impression cylinder, the form cylinders being located alternately on opposite sides of said row, and the end form cylinders being placed at acute angles with the row, and means supplying sheets to the first of said impression cylinders, whereby sheets may be printed as described and the form cylinders be readily accessible, substantially as described.
' 3. The combination of a sheet supplying cylinder, a receiving and collect-ing cylinder,
and two sets of grippers thereon, each set arranged and operated alternately to receive sheets from the supplying cylinder, whereby sheets are collected, substantially as described.
4. The combination of a sheet supplying cylinder a receiving and collecting cylinder and two sets of grippers thereon co-acting vwith the same longitudinal part thereof and each set arranged and operating alternately to receive sheets from the supplying cylinder, whereby sheets are collected, substantially as described. 5. The combination of a sheet receiving and collecting cylinder, two sets of grippers thereon each set being operated alternately to receive and retain printed sheets, and-a sheet layer receiving the packs of sheets from said cylinder, and delivering them, substantially as described.

The combination of a sheet receiving and collecting cylinder, two sets of grippers thereon alternately co-operating with the same longitudinal part thereof to receive and retain sheets, and a sheet layer receiving the packs of sheets from saidl cylinder and delivering them, substantially as described.
7. rlhe combination with a sheet supplying cylinder having sheet retainers, a receiving and collecting cylinder, two sets of grippers thereon each set operating alternately to take sheets from said supplying cylinder, and a sheet layer to which said collecting cylinder delivers packs of sheets, substantially as described.
8. The combination of a sheet suppiying cylinderhaving grippers,a receiving and collecting cylinder, two sets of grippers thereon each set operating alternately to take sheets from said supply cylinder, means co-acting with said supplying cylinder to feed the sheets forward when either set of grippers open to take sheets, and a sheet layer to which said collecting cylinder delivers packs of sheets, substantially as described.
9. The combination of a sheet supplying cylinder having grippers, a receiving and collecting cylinder, two sets of grippers thereon co-acting with same longitudinal part and operating alternately to take sheets from saidsupply cylinder, means co-acting with said supplying cylinder to feed the sheets forward when the grippers are opened, and a sheet layer to which said collecting cylinder delivers packs of sheets, substantially as described.

13.` The combination of a rotating cylinder, a shaft thereon having a set of grippers for co-acton with a longitudinal part of said cylinder to grip sheets and journaled in bearings movable relatively to said cylinder, a second shaft thereon havingaset of grippers for co-action with said longitudinal part to grip sheets and journaled in other bearings movable relatively to said cylinder, a sheet feed at one side of said cylinder, a delivery at the other side of said cylinder, mechanism for operating one set of grippers to take sheets during alternate revolutions of the cylinder,
means for moving the second gripper shaft during said alternate revolutions to Withdraw said second set of grippers from the said lon- A gitudinal part, mechanism for operating the second set of grippers during the other alter-- nate revolutions of the cylinder to take sheets, means for moving the first gripper-shaft during said other alternate revolutions to Withdraw the said first set of grippers from the said longitudinal part, and devices for opening the unwithdrawn set of grippers to release the sheets at the delivery after the desired number of sheets have been collected, substantially as and for the purposes described;

The combination of a rotatingcylinder, a rock shaft thereon having arms, a shaft having grippers for co-action With a longitudinal part of said cylinder and journaled in said arms, a second rock shaft on said cy inder having arms, a second shaft having grippers for co-action with said longitudinal part and jonrnaled in said arms of said second rock shaft, a sheet feed at one side of said cylinder, a delivery at the other side thereof,
mechanism for operating one setof grippers during alternate revolutions of the cylinder to take sheets, means for moving the rock shaft caur-rying the second set of grippers during said alternate revolutions to withdraw said second set of grippers from said longitudinal part, mechanism for operating the second set of grippers during the other alternate revolutions of the cylinder to take sheets, means for moving the rock shaft carrying the rst set of grippers during said other alternate revolutions to withdraw said firstl set from the said longitudinal part, and devices openlng the unwithdrawn set of grippers after a certain number of revolutions of the cylinder, whereby sheets are collected and delivered, substantially as and. for the purposes described.
16. The combination of a rotating cylinder, a rock shaft thereon having arms, a grippershaft journaled in said arms and the grippers being adapted to co-act with a lon gitudinal part of said cylinder to grip sheets, a cam loosely sleeved on the shaft of the cylluder, an arm on the rock shaft controlled by said cam, and mechanism rotating the said cam once in two revolutions of the cylinder, whereby the grippers are moved to and from the said longitudinal part, substantially as and for the purposes described.
17. The combination of a rotating cylinder, a rock shaft thereon having arms, a shaft Journaled in said arms and having a set of grippers for co-action with a longitudinal part of said cylinder to grip sheets, a second rock shaft on said cylinder and having arms, a shaft journaled in said arms of said second rock shaft and having a set of grippers for co-action with said longitudinal part of said cylinder to grip sheets, mechanisms operating said sets of grippers to take sheets alternately as described, an arm on each of said rock shafts, and cam devices controlling said arms to move said sets of grippers to and from said longitudinal part, one set during one revolution of the cylinder, the other set during the next revolution thereof, whereby sheets are collected, substantially as and for the purposes described.
18. The combination of a rotating cylinder, a rock shaft thereon having arms, a shaft journaled in said arms and having a set of grippers for co-action with a longitudinal part of said cylinder to grip sheets, a second rock shaft on said cylinder having arms, a shaft journaled in said arms of said second rock shaft and having a set of grippers for co-action with said longitudinal part, an arm on the first named rock shaft, a cam loosely sleeved on the shaft of said cylinder and controlling said arm, mechanism rotating said cam once in two revolutions of the cylinder, an arm on the second named rock shaft, a second cam loosely sleeved on the shaft of said cylinder and set oppositely to the first named cam and controlling said last named arm of said second rock shaft, and mechanism rotating said second cam once in two revolutions of said cylinder, whereby said sets of grippers are moved to and from said longitudinal part, one set during one revolution of the cylinder, the other set during the next revolution thereof, substantially as and for the purposes described.
19. The combination of a cylinder, grippers and throw-oifs thereon, a receiving and collecting cylinder and two sets of grippers thereon, each set of grippers operating alternately to take sheets, the grippers of the first named cylinder opening to release, and the throwoffs pushing the ends of, sheets against said receiving cylinder as said parts approach the same, whereby sheets are collected on said receiving cylinder, substantially as described.
20. The combination of a sheet-suppliel', collecting cylinder 34, gripper-bearing shafts 40, 51', shafts 38, 49 their arms 39, 50, movable cams 4.2, 59, means for moving them to rock shafts 40, 5l alternately, cams C', C2, and means for moving them to rock shafts 38, 4.9 alternately, substantially as described.
