. A UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THEODORE SCHAFER,
OF MAROA, ILLINOIS.
EXTENSlBLE MEASURING-STICK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 510,994, dated December 19, 1893. Application filed August 7, 1893. Serial No. 482,604- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEODORE SGHAFER, of Maroa, in the county of Macon and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extensible Measuring-- Sticks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is particularly designed for taking pants leg measures, though it may be used for other purposes, and it is embodied in the details of construction and combinationsof parts hereinaftersetforth and claimed.
In the drawings forming part of this specification Figure 3 is a face view of the device, together with dotted lines suggesting the manner of using it to obtain pants leg measures. Fig. 1 is an edge view, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged section on broken line 2-2 in Fig. 1.
The stick 1 has the head 2 at its upper end, and the guide or keeper 3 at its lower end. The stick 6 has the keeper 4 secured to its upper end and slidingly embracing stick 1. It is held slidingly in keeper 3, and its edges adjoining stick 1 are rabbeted as seen at 7 in Figs. 1 and 2. A sliding indicator 9 fits on stick 6 between keepers 3 and 4, and engages the rabbeted angles in a manner to prevent displacement. Keeper 4 is provided with spring pawl 5, which engages notches in the edge of stick 1 and holds the two sticks in any desired co-relation, and a similar pawl, 10, on slide 9 retains such slide in any desired position on stick 6. The ferrule 8 on the lower end of stick 6 represents the proper space between the floor and the bottom of the pants leg, and the stick is divided into inches, or other units of measurement, and numbered in regular order from the ferrule upward. The stick 1 is considerably wider than stick 6, and the keepers are so constructed that an edge of each is flush with the other. That part of the surface of stick 1 that coincides with, or forms a continuation of, stick 6 is divided the same asstick 6 and, beginningwith the number next higher than the highest number on stick 6, it is-numbered from the head 2 downward in regular order. The opposite edge of stick 1 is graded, or divided in a manner similar to that already described, but the numbers begin with one next the head and increase downward in regular order.
In using the device to take the measure for pants legs, the head 2 is properly and firmly placed in the crotch of the person measured, and the device is extended or shortened, by sliding one stick on the other, until the ferrule touches the floor, when the pawl 5 is permitted to engage a notch in stick 1 and make the adjustment permanent. Next slide 9 is adjusted to show the proper knee measure, the
pawl 10 is permitted to engage the stick and the operation is completed. The entire length of the leg is read on the right side of stick 1, as this particular stick is constructed, and the knee measure is read on the left side; the upper edge of keeper 4 acting as an indicator in the one instance and the upper edge of slide 9, or rather a lateral extension of such slide, acting as an indicator in the other instance.
In addition to the specific use described, the device is capable of use wherever an extensible measuring stick is required.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. An extensible measure composed of two sticks, each having a keeper slidingly embracing the other, and a sliding indicator on one stick and between the keepers, substantially as set forth.
2. In extensible measures, the combination of stick 1 having head 2 and keeper 3, stick 6 having keeper 4 and ferrule 8, and indicator 2; each stick being held slidingly by the keeper of the other, the indicator being mounted slidingly on one of the sticks between the keepers, the stick Gbeing divided and numbered from the ferrule up, and the sticklbeing divided and numbered on one side from the head down in continuation of the numbering of stick 6, and on the other side from the head down beginning with 1, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I sign my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
