Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
G. R. MOBEHOUSE, OF GARDINGTON, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHURNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 51,073, dated November 21, 1865.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, C. It. lVIOREHOUSE, of Gardington, in the county of Morrow and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ohurns; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full and complete description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure l is a perspective View of the churn. Figs. 2 and 3 are views of the dasher.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the views.
My improvement relates to churns, as hereinafter described.
A, Fig. 1, represents the ease of the churn, that is of a square form, but it can be any desired shape. From the sides extend up standards B, between which there is an adjustable cross-piece, B, in which the upper end of the shaft 1) of the heaters has its bearing. This cross piece, when adjusted in place in the standards, is secured by a button, B.
a is a pulley on the upper end of the shaft D, on which there is a belt, E, that extends round a drivingpulley, (J, on which there is a crank, E, with a handle, F, whereby the Wheel is turned revolving the shaft D. The drivingwheel 0 is on a shaft, 0', connected to the frame A of the churn.
G is the lid or cover of the churn, made in two parts or sections, that come together in a line with the middle of the shaft, either or both of which can readily be removed.
The construction of the dasher or beater-s is shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and consists of an oblong piece, H, solid through the center, as at I), and the ends or Wings H are cut out in tapering angular throats K, as represented, formed by the upper portion of the wings being inclined downward in opposite directions, making the distance from c to e on opposite sides narrow, and from c to 6 wide, across which are bars 0, forming breakers. The under part, h, of the wings is inclined upward from each side, the inclination being longer from one side than the other, as seen at L in Fig. 3, which is a view of one end. The outer ends of the throats can be closed, as shown at L, by a piece, I, fitting in between the planes, as represented. The bars cacross the wide sides or ends of the throats, can be dispensed with, if desired. The opposite corners of the heaters are rounded olf, as shown at b. The position of the heaters when in the churn is near the bottom, and as the shaft revolves, from the peculiar construction of the heaters, the milk striking against the sides and breakers 0 and passing through the throats is agitated so as to ehurnit in a short time.
What I'claim as my improvement, and de' sire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The dasher, with tapering angular throats K, extending from each side of the shaft, when constructed, as described, either separately or combined with the breakers c and churn, when constructed in the manner herein set forth.
0. It. MOREHOUSE.
