exact descriptionof the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improvement in berry-pails.

The object of my invention is to producea pail specially adapted for use when picking berries, in order that both hands of the wearer may be free to do the picking.

A further object of my invention is to produce a berry-pail into which the berries may be dropped with certainty, even by a careless picker and none of the berries lost by being.

dropped outside the pail.

A further object of my invention is to prevent the berries, after being once deposited in the pail, from being accidentally spilled out by the movements of the picker.

. The invention will first be described in connection with the accompanying drawings, and then pointed out in the claims.

In the drawingsFigure 1 is a perspective view of my improved berry-pail. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same.

Referring to the drawings, A is a hollow truncated cylindrical receiver, composed of end pieces 1, preferably of wood, to which is secured a curved sheet 2, preferably of metal, such as tin, the mode of fasteningshown in the drawings being byscrews 3. This receiver is provided on either side, near its bottom, with a waist belt B composed of two straps 4, one of the straps being provided with a buckle 5 by means of which the belt may be united around the waist of the wearer.

A similar belt 0, also provided with buckles 6,

serves to support the pail from theshoulders.

D, D are a pair of longitudinal deflectors formed, preferably, integral with the curved sheet 2 and having ends 7 which are soldered or otherwise attached to the deflectors. These deflectors, as will be plain from the drawings, form a hopper-shapedmouth for the receiver, and, at the same time, prevent any berries from accidentally rolling out of the receiver when the pail isswung or jarred by the movements of the picker.

It will be observed that, while the inner edge of the deflector meets and is joined to the top edge of the cnrvedsheet 2, as shown at 8, the inner edge of the deflector D projects some distance inward to the point 9. Moreover, the curved sheet 2 ends at the point 10, as will be seen from Fig. 2. By this construction, the space under the deflector D is cut off from all communication with the berry receptacle, while the space beneath the deflector D is open to the receiver, thereby permitting the berries to roll upward into i said space when the pailis tilted forward accidentally. As the space below the deflector D is out oif from the receiver, the berries may be emptied from the pail when desired by pouring them out over the edge of the deflector D.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isg 1. In a berry-pickers pail, the combination, with a receiver, of a deflector on each side of the mouth of the receiver,' a waist-belt attached to the receiver near its bottom, and a shoulder-belt attached to the receiver above the waist-belt, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth;

2. In a berry-pickers pail, the combination, with a truncated cylindrical receiver, and a deflector on each side of themonth of the receiver and formed integral with the sides thereof, of a waist-belt attached to the receiver near its bottom, and a shoulder-belt attached to' 'the receiver above the waist-belt, substantially as described and for the pur- 9o pose set forth.

3. In aberry-pickers pail, the combination, with a receiver, of a deflector on each side of the mouth of the receiver, one of the deflectors having the space beneath it in communi- 5 cation with the receiver, the space beneath the other deflector being cut 0% from the receiver, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
