O. B. GUY, OF ELKADER, IOWA.
- IMPROVEMENT IN REIN-GUARDS FOR VEHICLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 5 1,041, dated November 21, 1865.
To all whom it may concern Be itknown that I, 0.13. GUY, of .Elkader, in the county of Clayton and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Rein-Guard for Vehicles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enableothers skilledin the art to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
The drawing represents a side view of my invention applied to a draft-pole.
This invention relates to a new and simple device for preventing the lines or reins from dropping under the front end of the draft-pole, a contingency of not unfrequent occurrence, and which is always attended with considerable annoyance and embarassment, and sometimes with danger, especially if the team be restive or is inclined to be unmanageable.
A represents the front part of thedraft-pole of a vehicle, and B represents my improvement, which is constructed of metal, and consists of a straight part, a, the inner end of which is made in the form of a fork, so as to straddle or fit over the draft-pole near its outer end and be secured to it by a pin or point, I).
The outer part of B is divaricated and has two prongs, c 0, which are in a vertical plane, the upper prong, c, projecting upward and outward from a, forming an obtuse angle there with and the lower one, o, projecting outward The prongs c c extend forward of the outer end of the draft-pole, as shown in tint Fig. 1, and the prong 0 will, in most cases, prevent the lines or reinspassing down under the front end ofthe draft-pole; but in case they pass over beyond a they will be caught by the lower prong, c, and the driver, by pulling gently on the lines or reins, will cause the device to turn up to the position shown in red, and the lines or reins will slip off from c, the device falling to its original position by its own gravity as soon as the line or rein leaves it. Thus, by this simple attachment, the annoyance attending the droppingot' thelines orreins underthefront end of the draft-pole is avoided. The device may be constructed and applied at a trifling cost.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent A rein-guard for vehicles constructed and applied to the draft-pole, to operate in the manner substantially as and for the purpose here in set forth.
0. B. GUY.
