Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN FERNALD, OF FRANKFORT, INDIANA,
IMPROVE-MENT IN CULTIVATORS.
Specification forming pa1t of Letters Patent N0. 51,031, dated November 21, 1863 T0 all whom z't mag concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN FERNALD, 01 J ackson township, Olinton eounty, State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Oulnivators, 0f which the following is a ful], clear, and exact description, reference being had t0 t-l1e accornpanying dmwings, making part 0f this speeification.
A is ehe main frame, partly broken awa y to sh0w the arrangement more clearly.
B B is an upright fram, bolted t0 A, t0 which the wheels O are attached.
D D are 1JWO truck-wheels under the forward part 0f the frame A, to take the weight off the horses necks.
E is the tongue, connected t0 the frame A by a roller.
F is a stop, fastened t0 the bottom 0f tongue and running under the forward cross-pieee 0f the frzune A.
G G G Gare the pieces to which the shovels are attached. Tl1e two forward pieces, G G, are pivoted (to allow 0f their being guided) t0 the lower end of the pieees H, which am fastened ab the top t0 t-he cross-piece I, which is hinged t0 the cross-piece J, which, in its turn, is hinged t0 the frame A. The bind pieces, G G, together with'the levers K K, are bolted firmly t0 the cross-pieee J.
L is a seat-board, bolted t0 the ends 0f the levers K, 011 which the operator sits when the plows and trucks are t0 be raised from the ground.
Mis the seat for the operator when the plows are in the ground. This seat is capable 0f bein g raised or lowered by means of t11e series of holes in P, and also may be moved back and forward by the h01es in A. When the corn is small it is pur; d0wn t0 the position shown in the drawings, to give the operator a chance t0 set it (the corn) up 0r thin it 0ut, if necessary, and as it grows larger the seat is raised t0 prevent breaking it; down. The handles X am raised or lowered to suil: the position 0f the seat by means of the hohes in U U.
0 is the back 0f the seat: M, and connected t0 it by a hinge. This back is connected to the levers K by the strap N and buckle. (Not shown.) When neeessary to mise the p1ows 0ver an obsruction, the operator 1eans back against O, which depresses ohe levers K and raises the plows; bul; in turning the maohine round he gets upon the seat-board L, when bis weight throws the 1evers K down 011 the bind end 0f the frame A and continues t0 tilt the fmme, which raises the trucks D D frgm the ground until the stop F strikes th0 cross-piece ofthe frame A, when the machine m ay be turned 011 the large wheels O.
'lbe rolling shie1ds V V are used, when the corn is srnall, t0 prevent the clods from rolling ont0 it and covering it up, an(l rennoved, together with the cross-bar 5, when Ehe corn is large enough t0 bear the dirt. Each 0f these shields is cornposed 0f two plates bolted or screwed together, the holt passing through curved slots 2 2 in one 0f them, t0 allow 0f its being slipped a short distance independent 0f the other, for the purpose of closing the openings 4 4:, &c., to let 0nly the fine dirt throngh 130 the corn when it1's very small, and t0 allow of their beim g enlarged as the corn grows larger. These shields are carried by the piece V, and ehe distance between them may be altered by means 0f the holt 3 und Ehe s1ot through whieh it; passes. The rod Y is riveted at the bottom 130 the bar 5 and asses up through a long slot in W. The upper end ofW is connected loosely to the bar 6, (near Ehe handles X,) t0 allow it to be guided with the p10ws G G. Thepiece W w0rks loosely 0n the rod Y, in order that the shields V may roll over clods and accommodate themselves so the uneven snrface of the ground. The brace-chains t0 the forward plows are hooked 0n hooks 011 the board R, whieh is hin ged ata t0 the fra1ne A. The lever S is fastenec'l a1: its lower end to the board R, and gears near its npper end in the rack T, and is operated by the handle S. This is used t0 regulate the depth 0f the forward p1ows when the r0w 0f corn is 011 the ridge 01 in the open furr0w 0f a kund.
What I olaim zus my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The momble seat M, connected t0 the levers K K, in t'he manner and f01 the pnrpose described.
2. T110 doubleplated perfom'fied rolling shields VV, when used in the manner and f0r the purpose deseribed.
. In testimony 0f which invention I hereunto set 1ny band.
