G. L. BBLGHER. SHAVINGBRUSH.
No. 510,152. Patented Dec. 5, 1893.
GILBERT L. BELCHER, OF OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA.
SHAVlNG-BRUSH.
SPECIFICATION forming partof Letters Patent No. 510,152, dated December 5, 1893.
Application filed March 9, 1893 Serial No. M35310. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GILBERT L. BELOHER, a citizen of the United States, residing in Oakland, Alameda county, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Shaving- Brushes; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to shaving brushes.
It consists of a brush having a hollow handle forming a reservoir for the soap, an opening through which the soap is projected from the reservoir into the base of the brush, and a means for forcing the soap from the reservoir into the brush. 7
Referring to the accompanying drawing for a more complete explanation of my invention, the figure represents a sectional view of my improved device.
A is a hollow handle of sufficient length to serve as a reservoir fora quantity of shaving soap or paste which is preferably made cylindrical in form, and introduced into the reservoir so as to practically fill it. One end of the reservoir is closed, and has a small hole or holes B made in it. Upon this end of the reservoir is fixed the brush 0 so as to project outwardly from the end, and its base surrounds the opening B in the reservoir. The opposite end of the reservoir is screw-thread ed, and is adapted to receive a correspondingly screw-threaded plug D which forms an extension of the handle, and has a milled head E or other convenient means by which it can be turned. When thisplug is screwed into the reservoir until its closed end presses upon the body of soap contained in the reservoir, it will commence to press the soap or paste out through the small opening B, and into the fibers of the brush. It is then only necessary to wet the brush in water and pass it over the face of the operator, when a sufficient lather will be produced for shaving purposes.
The amount of soap forced into the brush is regulated to suit the requirements, and the 5 device is always ready for use. It is especially useful for travelers, and those who have limited accommodation for the usual articles necessaryin a shaving outfit. If desired, the upper portion or plug may be made long and hollow, having a cap and a receptacle in its rear end through which a reserve supply of the soap may be introduced into it, or the supply may be contained in the outer part and forced through holes in the part adjacent to the handle by a screw or by a piston movement.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As an improved article of manufacture, a shaving brush consisting in the tubular interiorly threaded handle, open at its inner end, closed near its outer end, and having a short tube extending from its closed end into the bristle receiving socket or brush head at said outer end, and a hollow externally threaded plunger of the same diameter throughout its length, and of the same size exteriorly as the interior of the said handle, to closely fit the same, the inner end of the said plunger being closed to form a piston and its outer open end being provided with a removable plug or cap; the space within the handle being adapted to receive a cake of soap, and the space within the hollow plunger being adapted to receive a number of extra cakes of the same size, with which to recharge the said handle.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
GILBERT L. BELCHER.
