SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 510,049, dated December 5, 1893.

Beit known that I, JEREMIAH RYAN, of the city of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Hammers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had tO the accompanying drawings, forming part Of this specification.

My invention has relation to hammers, and consists in combination with a double-headed hammer of a tack Or nail-holding device, as illustratedlin the drawings, and as hereinafter particularly described and claimed.

The Object of my invention is to provide a double-headed hammer with tack or nailholding construction upon one of the faces of the hammer-heads into which construction the tack or nail may be readily slipped to position for driving purposes and when partially driven readily disengaged from the holder by a slight lateral movement of the hammer. t

A further Object is to provide at a small cost a durable construction of nail-holding attachment in which the liability of getting Out of order is reduced to a minimum.

I am aware that numerous constructions of nail and tack-holding attachments for hammers have heretofore been invented, and I do not claim the same broadly, my aim being to produce an improved practical construction.

A represents a double-headed hammer-head secured to a handle, H, of ordinary construction.

B is the tack or nail securing attachment composed of a double strand of stilf wire t having the upwardly extending prong, b, en-

gaged in the orifice, o, of the hammer-head between the handle, H, and the metal of the head, as illustrated in Fig. 1, for securing the attachment in position, though other means of securing the saine may be employed. In close proximity to one of the faces of the head, A, the upwardly projecting prongs, b', integral with the main body of the attachment, B, are provided at such a distance from the face Of the hammer-head as to allow the shank of the nail or tack to be inserted between the two upwardly projecting prongs, b', with the head Of the tack or nail engaging firmly between the inner face of' the prongs, b', and the outer face of the hammer-head; the attachment, B, is so bent and formed as t0 tend tO normally spring the prong, b', tO- ward the face of the hammer-head. I preferably provide a turn, b2, in the mam body of the attachment, B, as illustrated in Flg. l, to provide a more eectual spring, though this construction is not necessary, and the plain construction, as illustrated in Flg. 3, may be employed. I also provide on the end of the hammer-head and integral therewith a depending ear or lug, a, having an orifice, d', provided therein for the passageand reception of the attachment, B, as a guide and protection for the said attachment and as a means of assisting in retaining the parts in position.

In Operation after the nail Or tack has been driven partially into the wood Or other material by a single blow a lateral inward movement of the hammer releases the prongs, b', from engagement with the nail Or tack, whereupon it is driven home by means of the reverse end ot' the hammer-head.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a double-headed hammer the combination of the nail-holding attachment, B, consisting of the prongs, b', provided at one end of the hammer-head in close proximity to the face thereof, securing prong, b, and guiding lug a, provided On the head, A, and by which the attachment is guided, substantially as described. f'

2. Combination Of double-headed hammer, nailsecuring prongs, b', spring, b2, and attaching prong, b, and guiding lug, a, formed integral with the head, A, and having a guiding Orice, a', for the tack holding attachment substantially as described.
