KEY AND KNOB FASTENING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 509,489, dated November 28, 1893.
Application filed June 16, 1893. Serial No. 477.886. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELLA V. REYNOLDS, of the city of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Key and Knob Fastening Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, form ing part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a device by which a door key after being operated to throw the bolt into the locked position may be locked to the turning knob of the door and prevent the turning either of the key or the knob from the outside as more fully set forth hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a sectional elevation on the line 11 Fig. 3 of a key and knob fastener bolt showing the same in the looking position. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the key and knob unlocked and Fig. 3 is an elevation of the same looking in the direction of the rear of Fig. 1.
My invention is principally intended for application to knobs and door keys of hotel rooms where after the occupant has entered the room and turned the key to throw the locking bolt into engagement with the keeper the key and the knob may be firmly locked together preventing the turning of the knob from the outside or the turning of the key by the introduction of any tools from the outside of the door, although it may be used in any suitable place Where it is desired to effectually lock the key in position.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the door which is provided with an ordinary lock, B, and pair of turning knobs, O, the knob, 0, being recessed at c, for the reception of a sliding bolt, D, having an operating handle, d, projecting through a slotted opening, 0, in the knob so that the bolt may be readily raised or lowered as required, and at its upper end the slot is provided with a recess, 0 forming an ofiset from the main portion of the slot and into which the handle, (Z, may be turned when it is desired to keep the looking bolt in the raised position. The key, E, is of any suitable construction, but by preference has a handle, e, provided with a single opening, e, of a diameter slightly greater than that of the bolt, D, and so situated that after I the key has been turned to throw the locking the opening will be directly in line with the sliding bolt, D, and the latter may then be moved down to the position shown in Fig. 1 passing through this opening and firmly looking the knob to the key and preventing the turning of either.
It will be understood that various modifications of this invention may be made with-- out departing from the spirit of my invention, such, for instance, as the employment of a diiferent character of the sliding bolt, D,or the substitution of two ormore of such bolts for the single bolt shown in the drawings for use in connection with key handles, as ordinarily constructed with two or three openings.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of the door-lock and key adapted to such look, a turning knob and devices for locking such turning knob to the key, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of the door-lock, the locking key adapted thereto, a turning knob, a sliding locking bolt adapted to a recess in said knob and in line with an opening provided in the handle of such key, substantially as specified.
3. In a door-lock the combination of a revoluble shank and handles as an operating means for the door-latch, an auxiliary look ing bolt provided in said look, a key for operating said locking bolt, and a sliding bolt adapted to a recess in one, or both, of said handles, said bolt being adapted to engage in an orifice in the handle of said key, substantially as specified.
4. The combination of the door, the look, a key, E, adapted to such look, a handle for such key, the bolt receiving opening, 6', a turning knob having a recessed bolt-receiving opening, a bolt adapted thereto, an oper ating handle, (1, extending beyond such bolt through a slotted opening in the knob and a retaining recess provided in the knob at the slotted opening of such knob, substantially as specified.
