BUILDING CONSTRUCTION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 509,446, dated November 28, 1893.

l To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, TIMOTHY OSHEA, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Building Construction,of which the following is a speciication.
My invention relates to certain improvements in buildingconstruction designed to prevent the vibration and noise of the floor of one story from reaching the ceiling beneath it, and being thus transmitted to the air of the apartment below.
My improvements'will be readily understood from the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section taken through a floor and ceiling in a direction at right angles to the floor timbers. Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken parallel to said timbers.
The floor is represented at A, and may be of any approved construction. This licor rests upon timbers, B, supported from the side walls, C, C', in any ordinary way and spaced apart by means of metal bars, D. From these bars, hangers, E, are suspended, said hangers carrying timbers, F, to which the furring strips, G, are nailed, said furring strips supporting the ceiling which may be of any construction desired. The han gers,E,have hooks, e, e', adapted, respectively, to receive the bars, D, and the timbers, F, and the ends of said hooks are extended sufciently to enable clamping bolts, e2, to be run through below the bars and above the timbers by means of which the hooks are clamped tightly upon the parts within them to prevent anysliding back and forward. i
It should be noticed that the lower edges of the timbers, B, are some distance above the furl-ing of the ceiling, so that it is impossible for them to touch the latter to transmit any vibration thereto. On the contrary, the vibration is taken up by the elasticity of the bars, D, from which the entire ceiling is hung.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination with a door, A, of Iioor timbers, B, spacing bars, D,between said timbers, hangers, E, carried by said bars, ceiling timbers, F, carried by said hangers andaceiling supported by said timbers, F, substantially as described.
