MASONS TROWEL.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 509,352, dated November 21, 1893. Application filed August 21, 1893- Serial Ito. 483,6- (No model.)

To aZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, AUGUSTINE RONCAGLIA, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Masons Trowels; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the. figures of by providing the tool with a flange formed on either side of the shank and of sufficient width to afford the necessary protection to the hand. The necessity of this protection will be readily understood and acknowledged by all accustomed to the use of tools of this class. The constant contact of the fore finget of the right hand with the mortar makes the finger sore by reason of the tendency of the lime to destroy or eat through the skin of the exposed part.

The further object of my invention is to provide a'device of this class, which, while affording the protection stated, shall be simple in construction, economical in cost, reliable, durable and efficient in use.

To these ends, my improved trowel consists of the features hereinafter described and claimed all of which will befully understood by reference to the accompanying drawings in which is illustrated an embodiment thereof.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a trowel provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a section taken on the linem-w, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line y-y, Fig. 2.

Similar reference characters indicating corresponding parts in the several views, let the numeral 5 designate the trowel plate, 6 the handle and7the shank which enters the handle. The vertical part of the shank or that part extending upward from the blade is provided with the flanges or fiat portions 7 which extend outward from the shank a suitable distance on either side and unite at the top in a part 7 which projects over the ferrule 8 of the handle. The flanges 7 are of sufficient width to prevent the material on the blade of the trowel from coming in contact with the hand of the person grasping the hanidle of the tool.
