SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 509,112, dated November 21, 1893. Application filed March 22,1893. Serial No. 467,183. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FERDINAND ZIPPER- LING, a citizen of Germany, residing at Zehlendorf, near Berlin, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inDevices for Disengaging Animals of Draft from Vehicles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in devices for readily unhitching animals of draft from vehiclesin case they fall, become unruly or run away; and the object of my invention is to provide a new and improved attachment tothe Whittle-trees, poles and shafts of vehicles by means of which the horses or other animals of draft can readily he disengaged in case of necessity, by merely pulling a chain or strap, from the drivers seat.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l, is a plan-view of a Whittle-tree provided with my improved unhitching attachment. Fig. 2, is a horizontal sectional View of the same. Fig. 3, is an enlarged detail plan-viewof my improved bitching device closed, the top plate being removed. Fig. 4, is a vertical transverse sectional view of the same, on the line a: 0c, of Fig. 3. Fig. 5, is a view similar to Fig. 3, the unhitching device being opened.
Fig. 6, is a plan-view of the front end of the pole, showing my improved unhitching device applied, and said figure showing it both in closed and open position. Fig.v 7, is a detail side-view of the unhitching device as arranged for harness, saddles, and Fig. 8,.is a side-View of the harness-saddle and unhitching device on the same.

The unhitching device consists of two jaws d b, of which the jaw b is xed, it being either riveted or bolted to the end of the of which, when the jaws are closed, rests and abuts against the end of a lug g formed on the pivoted end of a leverf, mounted on a pivot g between the jaws and behind the pivot c, which pivot is held between the cover plates e e. A spring h bears against said lever f and normally holds the same in such position that the end of the lug g rests on Vand abuts against the end of the projection d. When the parts are in this position it is impossible to separate the jaws,`and the said jaws securely hold the rings or links B on the ends of the traces. Chains e' are fastened to the free ends of theleversf and pass through guide-tubes o on the rear side of the Whittle-tree to the center of the same, where they are united, to he extended up to the drivers seat. To protect the lever f and spring 7L from dirt and dust, a cap or casing fn. is fastened on the end of the whiffie-tree and to the plates e, so as to surround the above mentioned parts and protect them. The same jaws d b can be applied on the front ends of a pole O and in this case the chain t' is guided in a groove lo in the pole, which groove is covered by plates m. In a like manner said jaws may be pivoted on the plate Z, which can be fastened to the sides of a harness saddle D. Ordinarily the jaws are closed, and, as stated, are securely held in closed position bythe lug g', which abuts against the end of the projection d. In case the horse or other animals of draft fall, become unmanageable or run away, all that is necessary is to pull the chain i from the drivers seat, so as to disengage the traces from said jaws, .or to disengage the backing straps either from the front of the pole or from the sides of the harness saddle.
` Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an unhitching device, the combination with a fixed jaw of a pivoted jaw having a projection, a pivoted lever having a` lug, the end of which can abut against the end of the said projection'when the jaws are in closed position, a spring acting on said lever and a chain connected with the lever, for
ro acting on said lever, a chain connected with the free end of said lever and a casing surrounding the plates between which the lever is pivoted, substantially as set forth.
