SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 509,070, dated November 21, 1893.
Application filed March 10,1893. Serial No. 465-455. (No model.)
mop wringers,'-its object being to produce a mop wringer which shall be simple in con struction, cheap to manufacture, easy to operate and efiectual inthe performance of its functions.
With this object in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figurel is aplan view, partly in section. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is an end view partly in section. Fig. 4 is a side View. Y c
A represents a metallic pail having a nose portion B, to which latter my improvements are applied. v
Located within the nose Bis a perforated trough or mop holder 0, which is preferably made of sheet iron bent into theproper shape, the metal composing it being provided with lugs or ears a, by means of which said trough or holder is secured to the sides of the nose portion 13' of the pail by means of rivets a. The ears or lugs a. may be integral with the trough O, or they may be secured thereto in any suitable manner. The upper end of the metal composing the trough is extended upwardly somewhat above the top of the nose B and bent inwardly toward the main body of the pail, as at c. Outwardly flaring guards c,
c are riveted to diametrically opposite sides of the nose and constitute, together with-the portion or guard o, a sort of hopper or tunnel to direct the mop properly to the trough O. Plates 0' are secured to the sides of the nose B, each of said plates being provided at the upper end with a perforated boss or enlargement d, and at the lower ends of, said plates, spindles e are located and project outwardly therefrom. Short shafts fare mounted in the perforated bosses or enlargements d and project through the walls of the nose B, and-into bosses or enlargements g made on a compressor arm D, the latter being rigidly secured to said short shafts by means of set screws 9. The compressor arm D is made curved in a direction opposite to the curvature of the bottom of the trough O, and on its upper or outer face is provided with ribs 9 to add strength thereto. Each short shaft f is pro vided with an arm h projecting at right angles thereto, and the u pperend of each arm his provided with a toothed bar h,to which links i are adjustably attached. A yoke or treadle E is connected with the spindles e, and retained in position by means of suitable nuts 6 on the ends of said spindles, said yoke or treadle being provided at its center with a foot piece j. The general form of the yoke or treadle E is L-shaped, and at the diamet rically opposite bent portions of said treadle or yoke, rods E are pivotally connected, the upper ends of said rods being pivotally connected with the links 2'. A small shaft or rod is is supported by the enlargements g of the compressor and extends from one to the other. About this shaft or rod, a spring 1 is coiled, one end of said spring being secured to the end wall of the nose B and the other end being adapted to rest on the edge m of the compressor, The point on the end of the compressor, on which the free end of the spring rests,'being located outwardly from the pivotal support of said compressor, it will be seen that said spring tends to normally retain the compressor in its upper or open position so that a mop can be readily inserted into the trough (3.
When it is desired to wring a mop, it is inserted into the trough 0 (being guided thereinto by the hopper formed by the guardsc, 0, c and the end of the compressor made to'rest on the head of the mop, as indicated in Fig. 2, carrying the mop and its head down together. The foot of the user is placed on the foot piece j and the treadle pressed down, causing the crank shaft which carries the compressor to turn and the compressor to assume the position shown in Fig. 2,thus compressing the mop and squeezing the water therefrom. By the employment of the toothed bars h on the ends of the crank arms h, the device may be readily adjusted for large or small mops. By employing the links '5 connected with the rods E, as shown in Fig. 4:, the compressor will be permitted to move back far enough to permit the ready insertion of the mop into the trough O.
ters Patent, is-
