DOOR-MAT.

SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 509,013, dated November 21, 1893. Application filed December 23, 1892. Serial No. 456.202. (Nomodel.)

Be it known that I, SAMUEL ARMSTRONG, a citizenof the United States, residing at Lind, in the county of Adams and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Mats; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will onable Others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention has relation to an improvement in door mats andthe novelty Will be fully understood from the following description and claims When taken in connection with the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l, is a plan view of my improved mat. l Fig. 2, is a transverse sectional view of the same, and Fig. 3, is an inverted plan view with the sheet metal backing removed.

In carrying out my invention I take apiece of wood A, such as a board of a sufficient length, width, and thickness, and provide it transversely 'With circular holes a, arranged ata suitable distance apart and in parallel rows as shown. In practice these holes are about three sixteenths of an inch in diameter andrarranged about live eighths of an inch apart, although the arrangement may be varied to suit the fancy or dictation of the me'- chanic. After thus providing the holes in the board, I take bristles B, which are preferably of horse hair, although they may be made of other suitable material, and after bunching a certain number of them together, I bend them in half,and insert the bent ends through the `holes a, of the board. I then take a wire C, preferably of copper, although other material might'be used. and starting with the outermostbristle at one corner, I secure one end of the wire in the loop of .the bristles as shown at D. I then pass the opposite end of the wire through the loop of the next adjacent bristle or bunch of bristles, and so on down the row E, until reaching the end; after which I cross over passing through the outer row F, at right angles tothe row E, and continuing around the margin, after which the nextv adjacent row of bristles is lstrungin the same manner; the terminal end of the wire being secured to the last bunch of bristles as shown at G. Itwill thus be seen that the bristles will be held fromlifting out the holes by means of a copper wire C. I next back up these secured or strung bristles by means of a metallic plate I-I, which is preferably composed of'galvanized sheet metal, and entirely covers the back of the board Where it is secured by means of nails I, or other suitable fastening devices. I then cover the marginal edge of the board and sheet metal backing by means of a binding strip K. This strip may be of brass, 'German silver, or nickel plate, so as vto enhance the beauty of the article. The binding which extends entirely around the marginal edge of the mat is turned under as shown at b, and turned over as shown at c, and the nails I, which secure the metal backing to the wood, may also be used to secure the binding,orother fastening devices may be employed for the latter purpose. l

While I have shown and described the mat as being of rectangular form in outline, it is obvious that one Of circular or other shape might be employed..

A device of the construction described, will be found very durable and effective for the .purposes designed, and it will be found very easy to keep clean.

Having' described my invention, what I claim is- The improved door mat described, comprisholes, the Wire C, passed through the loops of the bristles, the metallic plate H, covering the looped ends of the bristles, and the binding K, and means for securing the plate and binding, substantially as specified.
