PATENTED NOV. 14, 1865.
. F. ARNOLD.
. VEGETABLE .WASHBR.
. //////////////////////////fl//%///fl4 W??? &um;-
UNITED STATES PATENT rrihet FRANCIS AltNOLD, OF HADDAM NECK, CONNECTIUUT.
IMPROVED VEGETABLE-WASHER.
Specificntion formin'g part of Letters Patert No. 50.888, dated November 14, 1865.
To all whom` it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIs ARNOLD, ot'
Haddau Neck, in the oouuty of Middiesex und State of' Connecticnt; have inrented eertin new unt! useful Improvenents in Vegetahle-W'ashes; and I do hereby deehre that the following isha full, clear, and exact description ot'the same, reference being had to the aceompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the ztnnvxed d-mvings,making part of this specifieution, A represents the tub or box in which the vegetabies ure pheetl to be washed. Across the top of this box or tut), and`hiuged at one side of it, is ;1- hr, I). This bar is provided With a-hoie about center way ot' it, und near one end With a series of slnts, e ec, which form zt grate over u portion ot' the tub, said grate being marked U, :s seen in Fig. 2.
B represents a shaft which stands in zt vertical position in the tub A, and the upper end of' which passes through the hole in the hnr D, said hoie serving as &hearing for it.
Secured to the bottom of the tuh is a stepor metallie phtte, in which the lower end of the shutt B hus its bem-ing. l`his step or plate is eonenve on its under side, and is provided with ;in opening on its rini or edge, through which sztnd or dirt will pass outiustead of collecting around the lower end ot' the sha-ft B.
Just above the step or plete ti', and Secured to shat't B, is an arin, a, which is made fiat on its under side and oral upon its upper side.
To the upper end of sh'tft B is :i erankhandle.
In using this machine the regetahies are placed in the tub and the shaft B is made to revoh'e by mea-us of its hundie, thus causing the arni (e to :nove around the tub near its bottom, passing underthe vegetahles, and. thus causing them to rise and full. thus agitnting and wnshing them in the water which is placed 'in the tub. The form of the step d allows the snml'frou the vegetables to Washfrom under and around the lower end of shaft B, and thns prevent its wearing'.
By means of the'grzte G the Water from the tut mzty be drained withoutremoving the vegetahles frou the tub.
Having thus fuliy described my invention what. I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Putent, is
The arrangeuent of the grate O with the tub A and shaft B, as and for the purpose speified.
FRANOIS ARNOLD, witnesses:
AMELIA WORTHINGTQN, EDWARD WORTHINGTON.
